My Quality Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My comments have nothing to do with Gage, or his fish. If you have questions regarding Gage's fish or his sources, he would be more qualified to answer. Just to clarify further, I am not saying Gage pond raises his umbees, or that his fish have problems. I am saying that the Umbees I sell are either bred by myself (many of you have seen my male I posted pics of some time ago, or I import them in from Columbia). I am saying that as you may already know, many fish farmers pond raise fish;all kinds of fish, cichlids and others . I do not pond raise fish. All of my fish are either tank raised, or bred in large vats when they require a greater amount of space. Aside from that, all my imports are tank kept until they are ready to be bred or sold. I hope that clears your confusion.

I am still "confused" on a few points. Firstly, there was indeed some confusion on my part as to where these umbee originally came from. However, I don't understand the CLEAR implication you're making that somehow you not having a facility with ponds is anything special. The two main cichlid vendors on MFK (since you also apparently refuse to pay vendor fees to support this website?) are Jeff Rapps and Gage--to my knowledge Gage does not have any fish in ponds right now and Rapps does not use them period. Even then, I have seen great fish come out of growout periods in outdoor ponds that have natural sunlight, natural food sources on top of their regular feed, and good water quality due to the sheer volume of water they contain. Do you never plan on using ponds?

And furthermore:
1) Where do the large dovii listed on your website come from and how were they raised? And your Beani?
2) How many breeding pairs of wild caught festae do you have at your facility and how often are you importing these .75" "F0" festae you list?

I hope I can clarify these points for you. If I cannot via MFK, please send me a PM and I can send you my number, and I would be happy to answer your questions over the phone. First, me not being a vendor does not mean that I don't support hobbyists, or MFK. It is simply a decision on my behalf to conduct my business through my own site. As far as pond farming, I am not being critical of people that farm raise fish, or choose to pond farm. I am not saying it makes me special either. I am merely communicating my setup. When you farm raise fish, you have to deal with predation, cold weather, and other unknown factors that are not as easily detectable as you would find in smaller environments. It is true that you get better growth rate in ponds, but then you end up with potentially thousands of a specific species with no market for them. Additionally, many of the fish that are considered more desirable by some don't always do well in ponds. Many south american species, not all, do not produce in ponds (or produce very little in ponds,) as high PH levels cause calcification of the eggs and ovapile, preventing fertilization. So for example, that is why you see discus, uaru, psittacus, festae, fancy plecos, and many other species carry a higher price due to importing or a higher level of care.
As it relates to larger fish, depending on species, I raise them in large concrete vats, or large lined vats. As far as fish such as dovii, they are easy to import through many aggregators (Dolphin, Runnemans, Consolidated, Nautilus, etc). The larger the fish the higher the price as it impacts shipping. They can also be attained locally in south florida. I have brought in both recently and in the past, depending on what a customer wants.
Festae are seasonal and it is not always a guarantee that they trap. Most imported fish like festae, ornatum, atros, uaru fernandezyepezi are often imported under 2 inches and are caught by local fisherman in barrel traps. I typically purchase them when they are available. About 2-3 times a year, I bring in large festae that are 6-8 inches plus, and there are some people that have bought these large festae from me.
Additionally, when my festae spawn, I usually wholesale them out as F1 to various outlets. But as you know, it is not an easy fish to spawn, males and females don't get along, they spawn on and off, and are slow growing.
I hope I answered your questions. If I did not, please send me a pm and I would be happy to answer any further questions you have. While I often read MFK, I do not make many posts. That being said, I do sense cynicism and acrimony on your behalf toward me. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, and who you purchase from. Simply said, if you don't like my fish don't buy from me; there are plenty of people to buy from, and hope you find what you are looking for. As for my fish, I stand behind my product, its origins, and do my best to provide good service at a reasonable price. I think many people here will attest to that. If I am misreading or misinterpreting your questions, please accept my apologies

Very nice looking fish. Color starting to show already.

Those Umbees look fantastic! You should be very happy. Keep us posted on their progress.

To Cichluvr: It was nice meeting and talking with you this week, Dan. The gorgeous Lyonsi are settling in nicely. I also appreciate the info that you shared with me about various species and other things about the hobby. I'll be in touch about the other cichlids we discussed. It's always a pleasure doing business with you. Oh, I'm glad my Shiba didn't annoy you.:)

Male dovii 9"+ he is a little shy yet.
Thinking of changing the decor in the tank as the rocks in there are too sharp and with him darting around he has already scuffed himself up.

Cichluvr your facility sounds like quite the set up and I am 110% satisfied with your fish and service. I order from many sources to keep from inbreeding and I can say that you and Jeff rapps are the best I have had the pleasure of doing business with. Good job and can't wait for next weeks order:) thanks again Dan

Awesome Umbees here. Can always count on getting top notch fish from Dan. Not surprised at all.

Also not surprised at all to see aclockwork come in here and try to derail a perfectly good thread. No idea why the mods let him get away with this.

I'm always impressed by your ability to throw a fit and run to the mods when someone says you don't like.

Other than that, I'll just quote MLK Jr.:
"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. "
