My Red Devils head wont grow

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, first up thats definently a male. Only true way is to vent, but it's rare a female gets 12". They ussually stop around 8-10" Also, your RD is mostlikely the typical RD/Midas hybrid. I see the mouth and facual features of a Midas while the build loooks more like a red devil.

With Pure Red Devils it is rare that they get large nuchal humps, but will have slight humps ussually. They have longer mouths and larger lips, though not as pronounced in the wild after acouple generations removed from the wild. Here is a Video of a pair of pure Labiatus.

With Midas, they tend to get larger humps in which females can also develop them. My female's hump gets huge right before breeding. So weather your RD/Midas has a hump is irrelevant when it comes to sex though males tend to have larger ones. With my pair it is the oppisite to my dissmay, lol. Also, mounths are rounder and snouts tend to be less pronounced. Several things can affect hump. Size, Diet, Genetics, temperment, stress, breeding, ect. With my F1 Pair, my male's hump rarely swells. With his offspring, the dominent male from their first batch is already sporting an impressive hump at 6". Here are a few Videos of some pure Midas to give you an idea.

Compare that post to your post. It is a female. No hump=no balls.

And upgrade to a 75g.

Agreed on the 75g, but your No Hump = No Balls is 100% incorrect. Venting is the only full prof way to determin sex.

ok posting another pics for sexing purposes. He has long pointy fins, which ive read some people say is a male indicator. He's also got a little thing sticking out by his vent but i dont know if females have that as well. I know with mammals a little dangly thingy means male, and although several people have already told me female im hoping I dont have to change his name lol
That is 100% male. Pointy fins don't mean anything, but that vent proves it. And coloration looks fine. Just feed krill Hikari, Omega also works good, and add a mirror for a work out for acouple hours a day and it might grow a larger one. Up feedings too, but only as much as he will eat. If he feels like a dominent fish,he will look like one Thats a very nice RD/Midas you have their, good trails.

Boy or girl, it is a very nice looking fish!

I like the lighter color. Mine is the Petsmart Midas mix, who is a nice orange but not super deep in color like others Ive seen. But I like the little monster, so he's a keeper. I know mines a boy because when he was young I accidentally overfeed a few times and saw his little winkie hanging out and could tell it was not a female egg tube.

The overfeed method is NOT a good way to sex your fish. The little guy just kept on eating before I noticed it was too much!

A white devil? Thats what my militant uncle calls white people! So I guess I should start thinking about a new name for ole Pierre huh?
Any dissenting opinions to the female verdict?

LOL......mine too!!!! ,,,,LOL

I thought that vent pointing back means female and vent pointing forward towards the head is male. Maybe I have this reversed.

personally i think that is one of the nicer looking RD/midas. i prefer the white strongly over the orange/yellow. Also has very nice fins!

Nice Fish.. I have been told mins is a male and female? His hump is smallish and he is 10"

Sometimes tank size and tank mates can affect the size of nuchal humps. My RD grew a huge one when he had to protect his territory from his equally aggressive tank mates.

this plus as someone mentioned it could be female.
