My Rio Hondo carpintis

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see you have dithers for him lol, but seriously I hear caprintis aren't as aggressive as most herichthys. I had a h. cyano that was crazy aggressive and my h. deppi now is too. It is was hard to keep anything with them even if the tank mates were 2X their size.

Not all carpintis are created equal with respect to aggression in my limited experience. I have raised a group of Escondito's and am raising a group of Rio Hondo's. The Escondito's were as you suggested - aggressive but not hyper aggressive. My Rio Hondo's are way more psycho and I am down to just two now from an original 6 I started with. I got them small (1"-2") and they are now 4" to 5". They tried to kill each other and anything they are put in with. The 4 I lost were due to aggression from each other not other fish. I put one in with some festae and Kamfa hybrids I am growing out that were a full inch bigger and it pushed them around and was immediately king and I needed to remove him so he wouldn't kill them. I believe I have a male and female yet and I have them isolated from each other and other fish. I am hoping I can reintroduce them to each other but not sure how well that will work yet based on failed previous attempts. My point is that there are differences in individual fish and individual strains of the same species. I am still not sure where Rio Hondo is compared to Escondito or any of the other Carpintis collection locations, but I must say they are the most colorful I have kept and would highly recommend them.

Thanks!
Patrick

I agree. I have a 8.5" Vontehillo that I am raising and his aggression is unreal. HYPER aggressive. He will attack my hand in a 240 gallon tank and when I had him in a 135, he would attack the glass when you got close. Most that I've seen have been nowhere near that crazy.

Just some quick pics of my carpintis from Dan at Cichlidsoftheamericas He's gone from 3" to 8.5" in less than 6 months. Monster fish!
how do you think the rio hondo differs from others, is he bulkier and somewhat taller/thicker/less elongated body?.. to me these photos appear that way, but maybe it's only because of the angles.

Ill work on better pics tonight but try are very tall bodied. Nearly as tall as it is long. Also for the size very thick. The angle of the pics probably do lend to that image as well but that's how they are built. They are quite like trimacs in a lot of ways. Attitude, appetite, and length to height ratio. One of my favorite species for sure.

interesting... might make a good lone wetpet / or glass banger, in smaller than amph package?

are his eyes gold like most carpintis? can't tell in pics

nice

I agree but with the growth rate mine has had I'm interested to see what kind of size they do obtain. I would still gamble on them needing at least a 75 gallon for life. But IMO there hasn't been anything that mine has lacked compared to an amph. and I find this variant more attractive than almost any amph. species.
