My roommates puffers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
substrate is pretty messy...then again i vacuum constantly

Think I should vacuum out of courtesy? I'm not sure on the etiquette of watching over someone else's fish.

If he has them in brackish now then this is bad for the ottos and tetras. Black coloring on these puffers is a bad sign. You see them get black at the LFS and die. A single needs a 30 gallon too.

Your room mate sounds like a real jerk!

Yep, GSP's.
Will eat anything and are pretty messy.
Walmart and quite a few others sell them as freshwater. No issues with them in FW, Brackish and eventually SW depending on age.
They are also pretty hardy. They darken when stressed but also when hunting.
I have had mine for a year and keep them in a brackish tank with patriot crabs.
They are easy to care for. Just need clean water and food.
Good luck.

Green spotted puffer, brackish, can get to 4-6". Easy mostly anything, krill, flake, feeder fish, soft pellets, snails. Tank looks really clean btw
You don't feed puffers feeder fish, especially GSPs. What has he been feeding them up to now? If i was watching them, I'd be doing 10-20% WC daily, cleaning the substrate. Then wen my room mate came home, I'd give him a piece of my mind & instruct him to set up a 55-60g tank for them or find them another home!

He has been feeding them dry baby shrimp by the looks of it. However, I have had a bit of a pond snail problem in my bichir tank an have been throwing any pond snails I find in with the puffers for about two weeks now. There is some flake as well...but I am sure that is for the tetras...

I agree that this is not how I would keep these fish. I have voiced my concerns about them several times but he continues to insist that he has kept a puffer before and it lived for many years. He plans to keep them in this tank and, as you can see, he must plan to keep it freshwater as the Ludica (as I understand) would not do well under brackish conditions.

He plans to keep these fish as is and this stance does not seem to be one that will be changed soon.

After all, this is the same guy that has no heating stone/mat/lamp for his leopard gecko.

I couldn't live with someone like that. I'm too anal about my pets & all animal welfare.

Unfortunately, there is no law against this, other than a moral issue. Like I said, there's no way I could live with someone like that.
