My S.Manueli

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a little one month video update.
he’s been eating pretty good, mainly talapia soaked in vitachem with the odd shrimp here and there. I added peat to one of the canister filters and I have been making almond leaf extract every water change to drop my ph a bit. Out of my tap it’s about 7.6-7.8. I’ve gotten it down and to stay steady at around 7. I’m pretty sure he prefers the way the water colour filters the lights into the tank. It’s more of a softer yellow rather than bright white. I’ll have some photos up later in once there’s not so much reflection in the house.

^^^thanks for the vid...looking way better now. that's good that you use vitachem. they also like lean boneless pork chops, lean beef cubes and salmon.

I thought it was best to stay away from red meat and salmon because it’s fatty. I guess adding a few pieces here and there can’t hurt.
I took another video of him, photos are a work in progress..

lean beef/pork would be fine. i usually buy the thick samon or tuna as well and sometimes freshwater prawns. i remove the shell and head. back in the day i would also give beef heart but i remove all the fat.

Just a little update before I do the switch in the next little while. The first photo was taken March 22. The second today. He’s grown about 3/4 of an inch. Unfortunately I scared the crap out of him one day and he scratched his eye. You’ll notice it’s a bit cloudy close to the centre. I’ve done everything possible to help him heal but I think it’s permanent, he’s been super active and healthy otherwise. Water changes are weekly anywhere Between 40-60%. He’s been feeding on talapia soaked in vitachem with the odd shrimp here and there. I think I’m going to add some salmon into his diet a few times a month for something a bit fatty. I’ve been contemplating turning my 65gal into a convict breeder for live food but I’m not sure if I want the hassle. Any input would be appreciated.

nice!

180 will be a great home!

5”?

sorry about the eye... got a black arow with similar situation ?

the cons.... it’s up to you.... i’d imagine there’s a 20%-50% chance he accepts them as tank mates....
i had a breeding colony in with an xl rhom -

Yeah I’d say he’s 5”+.
As far as the eye goes not much I can do about it. Doesn’t seem to effect him at all so that’s a positive.
I doubt he’ll let the convicts live with him, unless he completely changes his attitude when I do the switch. I know the 65gal is smaller but he won’t let anything into his tank. My thought behind the convicts is that it is potentially a healthy source of food for him. As long as I’m doing the breeding and creating my own food source I know they’d be healthy. Only thing is is that I haven’t done it before and not sure if it’s worth the trouble.

If you already have breeding convicts it wouldn’t hurt to throw some in and see what happens. If you add them first they can claim territories and maybe keep the piranha at bay.
Beautiful piranha btw, sorry about the eye.

No I don’t have them. When I get the manueli in the 180 I’ll have an empty 65 for the convicts . Once they start breeding I’d use the offspring as a food source for my manueli. He’s currently on a diet of mainly talapia soaked in vitchem with the odd piece of shrimp thrown into the mix. I recently had a few tetras in his tank, he picked them off one by one over a few days. it seemed like his colour popped and having live food in his tank he was much more active. Noticing that now has me thinking about breeding a food source for him. I don’t necessarily care about feeding live but if it has benefits for him why not. I would continue to feed talapia/shrimp with a couple convicts a month. I wonder if anybody has tried this and noticed and difference when adding a live food source plus filets/shrimp vs frozen filets.
