My Silver Dollar Sp's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is an unusual-looking fish. I am not sure what to call it, other than a female Metynnis sp.
Because it is a female, one does not get the benefit of examining well-expressed humeral spots (the large black or red blotches on the anterior part of the fish), whose color, position and size make it possible to tell several of the 'spotted silver dollars". Being a female, the humeral spots are either not there, or are only very faintly expressed, not being very diagnostic.
Very nice fish! Looks fairly large as well.

Thanks, but my concern isn't with iding or sexing the fish. My concern is there are several places on the fish that are discolored/dark spots that are not the normal spotting or spawning dress. Yes, most of them have gotten quite large, over 5in diameter.

I guess I can't see those discolored spots, even though the images are fairly good. Sorry.
When I first got my 3 M. maculatus (known to be ~18 year olds then), one of the males was a mess, with discolored spots and horrible pop-eye (see picture below). It took some TLC to getting it back to health, as in the second photo (same fish ~3 years later).
Is this the kind of discoloration you are talking about? (again I can't see it in your fish).
Perhaps you can post additional images?

I think I see two discolored areas on your 3rd picture, on the lower, anterior half of the fish, approximately behind the pectoral fin. Is that what you are referring to?

Probably, I will try taking some better pics when I get home. I drew some arrows. I do see the spawning dress come out like you second pic.

Got home and went to feed the fish room and check on my SD.
Left and right side looks like burns so 50% water change. I think I screwed up stealing a sponge for the new 120g and swapping severum pairs.
I have pulled a sample to test.

You are correct. Those water results look bad. Lots of water changes until the filters get back to continuing their nitrification processes. The blotches you were seen may indeed have been burns. Good catch and good luck!

Thanks, I did a 60% Wednesday, 50% yesterday and have just finished a 30% ish. Numbers are trending down thankfully.

Did 4 large water changes over the last 5 days. Last one today and dowsed with Paraguard. Pictures are from today. Only the one SD shows the blemishes.
