She is in a tank by her self. I let her see a male in the tank beside her every month or so just to keep the pipes flowing... The male I want to breed her to next is not big enough.

I am not sure I understand this question... Of course the female can lay eggs without a male present. Once the eggs are laid a male needs to be present to squirt his love juice over the eggs to fertilize them.

A female that lays eggs is 9/10 times fertile. What I mean is that if the eggs are presented to a fertile male they will have fry. When a female lays eggs and no fry result from the spawn then 9/10 times its an infertile male or inexperienced male.
