My stingray died, I don't know why and I feel like complete garbage.. PLEASE HELP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
still to high just to kill ich. 85 max or you we stress you fish out even worse
So do you think a temperature spike killed him? Would there be nitrates still left over a couple days after with a total 30% water change? Even the goldfish seemed to not mind, maybe goldfish are a little more tolerant of temperature spikes given that they're pond fish?

The effects of a temp spike and and left over nitrates would have not helped at all. Imo goldfish are really hard to kill you can't base anything off of the goldfish. I had one in a heated tank for 2 years before my cichlids killed him ( that's when I learned not to put goldfish with cichlids) retics are very sensitive to water perameters. My guess would be it was because of fit ration and Temps.
Reticulated rays can nose dive really fast if things go out of whack so I hear

One water change will not get ride of all of your nitrates

I know, that's why i was wondering why the nitrates only measured 0.2 and lower after two tests :/ so do you think that the temperature really stressed him out and he broke his vertebrae? As I said before this was also 5 hours after I fed him. I'm no expert but i think nitrates are unlikely according to the two nitrate tests, unless nitrates disappear over the time period of two days? So far the options on my lists are either food poisoning or a heat spike that stressed him out and he broke his back. Even then I'm not sure. You're clearly more experienced than me anyhow lol.

It's hard to say but that would be my guess. Sorry about the late reply.
You do have a pleco they can be bullies and also could have been trying to latch onto him
It's ok, you've been a great help anyways! But if he was trying to latch onto him (which I've never witnessed) he would've definitely latched on eventually and you would've seen obvious injuries from it because of their huge size difference.

I would invest in a sump, personally I love it and will never go back to canister filter lol IMO. First I would defiantly sort out your fish, although they have been living together, it's not for there best interest especially for the gold fish. Im unsure whats your future plans, but if you can I would just jump right into getting a 180 or bigger to keep a retic for life or at least majority of it's life. With this you will have more water volume, especially if you decide on a sump which will add in an extra 30-50 gallons of water.

The thing is I can't afford or have the time for a sump or a larger canister filter such as an FX5. Do you think if I got a 1050-1150 GPH powerhead (my filtration is at 1083GPH now), a few java ferns, and got rid of my oscar when my Pbass hits around 10/11". Would my aquarium be suitable then for a retic ray? At that point I'd have about 3 large fish in my tank (a Kelberi Pbass, pleco, and a retic ray) not including the goldfish since when I catch more wild goldfish I'm going to keep them In a mini indoor "pond" during the winter. And maybe keep the largest nicest one in my 120.

A sump doesn't take time and if you do everything yourself can be way cheaper then any other filtration that tank is going to need for what you want to do.

Changing a filter sock or two is way way easier then cleaning any canister.
