My stingray died, I don't know why and I feel like complete garbage.. PLEASE HELP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It would be cheap to buy a small pump and make the overhead filter. Big foam block on the pumps intake. I used bio balls balls because I had them.

Yes that is true but they produce a lot of waste and you want to catch as much as you can in the mechanical and not have it sitting in the tank and clean your filters regularly. Believe me if you have rays you want a higher turnover rate. Bacteria will grow fine in a high flow rate tank.
What's the best and cheapest way to boost my turnover rate? And my canister is a fluval 406, along with the two 45-70 HOB tetra filters. I wouldn't think these give nearly enough turnover rate though lol.

Depends how expensive you wanna go and how capable you are of building things yourself. You can make 2 pvc overflows if the tank isn't drilled and make a sump if you want, that I would say is the ideal option, and you can make it as cheap or expensive as you prefer. Tbh if i were you, get rid of the crappy HOB filters on Kijiji and spring for a used fx5 or fx6. That and your 406 will only bring it up to "adequate" in your case (in my opinion), with your stock and circumstance i would still say it may be a bit low, but then again you seem vigilant with maintenance so if you clean them often enough you should still be fine. And, again my opinion, 50% WC weeks 1 and 3, 25% weeks 2 and 4. Get a good powerhead, fish street online has jebao wp-40 for 65 US and 1.68 shipping, great deal if you ask me. Get a good test kit, see if you can keep a steady cycle with low enough nitrates, and then look for another retic man, I have faith you can do it, but aim for Christmas, not easter, and read read read (and keep asking questions). Good luck man.

Thanks so much again!!

If it were me. Id go with 30-40% wc's 2x a week. 50% one week then 25% the following makes no sense. Youd be playing catch up ea week. Stay consistent and dont slack.

And a sump would make life much easier. Changing filter socks is the way to go. Opening up an fx5 is a pita if done as often as it should.

You can build a sump for the same price as a few and maintenance is easier imo.

In fact I sold a fx5 picked up a 100 gal tank and pump off kijiji / Craigslist. Plumbed the tank and filled it with media. I still think I had money left over

As far as I know from advice on here. Turnover is mostly for mechanical filtration. I have been told that for biological low flow can be better if the media has a long enough contact time with the water.

You are correct. Guys in Europe on turn over 2 or 3 times an hour which sounds crazy to me but hey they have been do get it for years. Just use power heads for water movement in the tanks.

Would powerheads fix my problem? For now I'm going to get better nitrate-killing filter media. Also I think the temperature might have contributed to him dying, My crappy digital thermo said it was at 88, even though the water felt considerably warm, and when I turned off the heater and changed 20% colder water WC the thermo said 87 afterwards even though the water was clearly colder? Could it also have been mis-interpretation of temperature? I was told 88 was a little hot. Thank you so much as well for your contribution as well!!!!! :)
