By the way, is anyone aware of anyone being prosecuted for simple possession of a stingray (i.e. not for commercial sales) in any state where they are illegal?

I'm not suggesting that anyone ought to keep a fish that is illegal. What I am suggesting is that the image of Fish and Game agents busting down doors based on extensive surveillance of forums like these is perhaps somewhat exaggerated.

There was a case where a dude was selling a gar listed on this site in California and he had someone interested and when they showed up and saw the fish they pulled out the badges.

Testing the water at this point is useless in determining anything. Dead fish left in the water for a period of time will taint the sample. Hopefully by now you have done a large water change.

On the contrary, its waste breaking down, will feed the bb, but if its rotting then yeah the water column will be 0. That will take 48-72+ hours imo. I think testing is a great idea, first thing I would have done.... If your oven or microwave clocks are reset then you had a power outage, easy to determine.... Sorry, and all this talk of illegal species is just talk, if you don't like it don't post here......he came here for help, not ridicule!

Where do you come up with the $25,000 figure? My research suggests that there is a civil penalty from $500 to $10,000 and a criminal penalty of six months in county jail or a $1,000 fine.

Edit: The relevant law seems to be California FIsh and Game Code Section 2125.

It depends on all the variables of the situation, for example if you are breeding and or selling. That's the highest fine I've heard of.

In California? There legal here, at least I think. 2 places I know have sharks for sale.

That's why they're banned, They do actually have an impact on the ecosystems in those rivers in lakes, And saying that you sold a fish illegally on a website full of feds that monitor these things isn't a very good idea. Plus MFK prohibits such acts.
