my submersible pump caught on fire!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
probably the plastic of the pump got old and crack which caused the pump to have short circuit and caused the problem.

I would never trusdt anything harbor freight made...I am sorry if this may offend anyone. Their stuff is good for an occasional use. For example, I'd use those pump for water change and etc, but I wouldn't use them as a permanent 24/7 pump on your tank. This goes with EVERYTHING they sell...Most of their products are made in china or india for mass produced with highest profit as possible. To do this, they compromise quality and longetivity.

For submersible pump, I like Quiet One, Mag, Eheim or Ocean Runner.

My favorite is Eheim and ocean Runner (notice they're both german made;))

Btw, I am chinese :)

Ah, so my pump isn't exactly the same, but it looks pretty close and is about the same price too. http://www.petsolutions.com/ViaAqua-Water-Pumps+I16972113+C49.aspx

For all I know they could have been made in the same place...I guess I should look into buying a backup pump and a smoke alarm, lol.
actually, the pump was way burnt up,stopped pumping, and the smoke detector a few feet away never went off :nilly:

I'm glad you were home to catch that! I'm curious if this pump was plugged into a GFCI circuit and if that would have tripped the circuit if this happened?
pump was plugged into a 6 way with the breaker built in,breaker never tripped, everything else plugged into it worked fine

I live in the Dallas area and we have a very high end LFS here that burned due to a similar situation. You are very lucky you were home. The store is rebuilt now, bigger and better than ever, but they lost something in the range of $100,000 in livestock, not to mention the multiple custom display tanks and all the high end inventory they carry. You can check out the store and some of their work at http://www.dallasnorthaquarium.com
:nilly:
