My sump/plumbing is too loud

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When all said and done it boils down to having to close off the primary with a gate valve achieve laminar AND achieve the silence FedEx is looking for. That still has not changed.

Keep in mind durso and Herbie are functionally different and have different strengths, might be worth reading up on if you haven't. Not having a siphon has probably saved me a bunch of leaks.

Can you elaborate on not having a siphoned helped? Are you referring to the BA? Thanks.

Durso avoid creating a siphon by pulling in enough air to prevent a siphon from forming. Nice when power restarts or when you accidently nearly overflow your sump testing out the new drop system.

Do you have any video/pics of your setup?

Anything in particular you are looking for? Wouldn't mind snapping some pics or vid but want to make sure I get everything you're looking for. I bought my system turnkey so the technical stuff behind it I learned after it was all set up. The previous owner did fix the problem by using ball valve to dial back the drain that overcompensates due to being unlevel. I've just let it go because I don't mind the noise and the benefits of protein skimming. I was planning to drill a hole similar to what you whipped up in paint but haven't done so yet. I also don't run reverse dursos, just the standpipes down to a 90.

I would just like to see the plumbing setup top to bottom and potentially hear what it sounds like. Just curiosity, though, so don't go out of your way.

Sound feels super subjective and doesn't translate well in video. It is loud though, and louder still with filter socks that give less surface for the air to escape. Still nowhere near as annoying as an air pump imo.

I see. The durso pipe is what's used for the Bean Animal style.

For the Herbie (which is what I have) I use straight stand pipes for the primary and trickle pipe. I do however have a third, tallest pipe that is completely dry. Overall it's very quiet.

I set up the beanimal overflow with a 1200gph pump and ir is completely silent. it is explained here... http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx

basically your main drain is a full siphon and thus no air..no noise. you control the flow of the main drain with a valve. you slowly close it until a small amount of water is flowing down the 2nd pipe. when it is correct the water flows down the side walls of the pipe and doesn't create gurgling sounds.

I further silenced my sump by putting a solid cover on it and drilling holes for the drains to go into. the last part of all my drains are 1" tubing so I can pull them out and remove the lid if I need to. that combined with the jebao pump= blissful silence.
