My tank is failing . . .

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, 3/8".

Structurally, they messed up when they took an 18" wide design and made it come out 14".
The top of the tank was weakened as a beam, and it's not holding the tank straight.

It doesn't just have simple bulges. It's deforming in complex ways.

I can get them to replace it in glass for $200 so that's what I will probably do.

I thought about YouTubing with this tank , like dropping it from my hoist and smashing it into bits as I display the company logo.

But fortunately I’m old enough to know better than to go after people who have just made dumb mistakes.

Whether they made the mistake of trying to be cheap or they made a mistake of some other kind is really irrelevant. But the Sales reps advice was to sell the plastic tank on craigslist.

Well the tank manufacturer did make me an offer to build me a glass tank of the same dimensions for a very low price.

What he did not mention was how thick the glass would be.

I am going to ask him to make me a slightly thicker tank and I will toss him a few bucks more. I do save money if I buy a plastic tank because I will drill that myself but I am not capable of drilling half-inch glass.

Yes, I'd say 12mm glass. Do you care about low iron or not now is the time to consider.

What type of overflow are they making since you mentioned holes being drilled?

I didn't explain this well. Short on time....

I drain with a single 1.5" pipe thru the bottom, and there's a big strainer at the top with coarse foam.

If the strainer clogs it then strains thru the top of the coarse foam which is 2x the surface. I have one big valve, and no other emergency drain. The system will stop pumping before the tank overflows because the system runs out of water. The pump has a bypass, that circulates water in the pump chamber, so it never runs dry, it just quits pumping high enough to fill the tank any more. 5 gals remains in the sump at this lowest level. To run correctly, the sump needs 6 to 14 gallons, and that's my max evaporation allowance before adding water. 8 gals.

That was with the level 1" down. At 6" down it cannot overflow unless I add too much water. It runs silent with the overflow submerged..

If the pump stops it has a bleed hole to prevent back siphoning, so the sump never overflows.

For those that have never owned an acrylic tank, you guys shouldn’t be offering advice. Acrylic and glass are totally different.

Ulu Ulu What brand or company made this tank? 3/8” is actually standard thickness for 60x18x24T size tank. Many big name manufacturers make them in 3/8” for this specific size. Go look up truvu, casco(sea clear), and advanceaqua to see the tank size thickness. I’ve owned acrylic tanks for 10+ yrs and can understand why this tank is bowing. In my opinion any tank over 20” tall should be made from 1/2” acrylic to minimize bowing. Another cause of bowing is if your stand is not fully supported the top wood can warp cause the bowing to become worse over time.

I have a used tank with the same exact size. It does bow out but that pretty normal. The seams are still good.

You can still use this tank if you plan to lower the water 4”. Drill a hole into your overflow for 1” bulkhead to allow it to drain to your sump. Easy fix.
