I wanted to post some update pics of my current thorichthys species-4 meeki, 4 Mixteco blue (from Adamsfishes) and 1 pasiones. I had more pasiones, but unfortunately they died when around 2". I need to get more.
I included an old fish I had bought as Ellioti, but think it might have been a thorichthys hybrid, but not sure what. It grew to 8", and had a very unusual head shape. The mouth looks nothing like any thorichthys I've seen. Especially for meeki, pasiones and maculipinnis which the lower jaw extends out. Also the red doesn't continue on the head/mouth. It was a very thick bodied fish, much more so than any thorichthys I've seen. I suppose I'll never know, but very curious. Unfortunately I don't have the fish or better pics.

Nice fish choices, big fan of any thorichthys.
Shame about the pasionis.
I would love to do a large group of meeki and pasionis again one day, then look great together.

Thanks. How did they do together? I understand they are found together in some locations in the wild.
Also did you have any problems w/ them trying to hybridize? I have heard many people don't mix thorichthys species for this reason. I've never had this problem.

Edit: can I get your opinion an ID on the last fish?

Yes they are found together in the wild but apparently never hybridise in nature.
I have read that they can hybridise in aquariums.
This never happened with mine each species tended to pair with its own kind.
I don't see it as a problem if they do hybridise, it's unlikely any fry would survive without intervention by the keeper.

It looks like a hybrid meeki to me.
The fishes head looks like an amphilophus to me.
It looks too big built to be a Meeki, even an old one.

Thanks, I could always separate them if they do. I have always kept mixed species community tanks, and have never had anything hybridize.
The astyanax bimaculatus make it difficult to breed anything as they are too fast for cichlid pairs. I had 3 HRP pairs in the same tank, and hardly any fry survived many spawns.

Meeki can get big and male can reach 8 inch. What,s fish is above the Meeki in the 6 pic down.

Thanks, I agree that it must have some meeki in it. What else, I have no idea. It was extremely aggressive. I gave it back to the LFS that sold it to me. I was very disappointed.
The same LFS had "aureus" which I could tell weren't.
