My thorichthys update

CichlidFish,

Since astyanax are so uncommon, you should try to raise a few fry. A really easy way to do it is to use outdoor containers/tubs. Pickup some tubs that hold 30-100g, throw in water hycanith, and add a pair of the tetras. As soon as you notice fry in the tub you could pull the adults.

Of course you would have to wait for summer at this point, but outdoor tubs are the least labor intensive way of breeding and raising tetra fry. Any other method is a combination of trial and error and lots of live food.

I have always wanted astyanax.

Thanks! Is it a temp change that triggers the spawn? Shouldn't there be a group spawn?
I've never bred any kind of terra, so I know nothing lol. I really would love to breed these.

They are probably spawning occasionally in your aquarium. I think outdoors works well for a couple of reasons. 1) gives the eggs plenty of places to hide among the plant roots and 2) the fry have plenty of microorganisms to feed on. 3) The adults get to feast on mosquito larva and whatever else.

I'm sure you can breed them indoors. But typically you need to have a way to isolate adults from eggs and then have lots of small live food until the fry can eat something easy like BBS or microworms.

Ted Judy has a good video series on Youtube. He shows you how to build a spawning tank and goes into food culture if you are interested in trying the process indoors.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys! The info is extremely helpful.

I highly recommend these fish. They are very hardy, not shy and very active. They will take food right out of your hand.
I think bimaculatus is probably one of the more "dosile" specieces. I have read mexicanus is probably one of the more aggressive ones.
If I lived in Texas, I would collect and breed mexicanus, because I think a lot of people would want them.

If I ever see some, I'll grab them!

I will let you know if I have any success.
I've been working on cleaning out my basement for some additional tanks. I also need to install a sink for maintanence.
After doing some research and watching Ted Judy on YouTube, I may get a 6' tank just for them.
