My thoughts on why a kid shouldn't build a monster tank (things to consider)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I guess a tank in the garage needing a cooler and massive heating plus tons and tons of food. I figure my 600 gallon tank with a drip system I will at most use another 40.00 in water a year. Maybe stuff is just check here.

Yup my tank is in a insulated garage. During the winter my energy costs sky rockets. For food alone I spend at least $150-$200 per month just on frozen seafood, bulk Canadian nightcrawlers, bulk super worms and other live foods, frozen silversides and bloodworms and bulk Hikari/NLS pellets. Then there's water conditioner. I go through 4L+ of Prime (for recharging Purigen and waterchanges) in 1 year easily and I use 16 oz bottle of Prazi Pro to treat my tank 2-3 times per year due to feeding lots of live foods. I will probabely convert to using Safe once i finish my last 4L bottle of prime to save some costs on conditioner. Everything just adds up.

i feel the op is immature for posting about kids cause there are adults that are way worse than kids and i have seen youngsters with way more knowledge than a bunch of people on here claiming to be moonster fish keepers

My take, many young teenagers, but not all(so lets keep the panties unbunched) drastically change their interests. Especially once entering highschool, suddenly cars, girls/boys, independence become priority. Then graduation and off to college, this leaves many a fish neglected and uncared for.

I find it to be nothing more than a passive aggressive way to get shots in because the thread you were using for target practice got closed. Informative and elitist at the same time. Your repetitive use of kids really drives home the point that you are in fact an adult. Congrats!
I too was wondering what brought this thread on untill I remembered the thread that got out of hand and subsequently closed......

+1. Even myself I've been in the hobby for 14+ years but on and off cuz u eventually lose interest or don't have the time for it especially when your still young and have your whole life ahead of u.

i agree. I'm 15 and currently in the hobby. i started when i was 8 and had a 30 with a gold gourami and red tail "shark". i took a break in middle school but still took care off my fish. last summer i got a 75 gallon tank and I've never been more excited about the hobby. people i know say i should get a massive tank or pond and put in a large catfish (preferably rtc, ten or hybrid) but i don't really want to because I'm a freshmen in high school so i have no idea were the next 15-20(life expectancy of those fish) years will land me. for now i only plan on upgrading to a 125 to house my ornate, lima and gar(at least for a couple years).

^ Just goes to show not all young fish keepers are irresponsible...

But i do agree, when your young you feel you have all the time in the world, but who knows where you'll end up in 15-20 years time... which is why i personally waited till i moved out into my own flat which i bought before buying a large tank...

Didn't want to go through the hassle of moving anything larger than my 60G tank... especially since i already knew at that time i was going to be moving into 2 more places before settling into my current residence...
