just to help u out i have owned many trying to have them in just fresh water. but it never works. they eventually will die. the last one i had i did it real slow to fully fresh n i had him eating daily in the fresh water tank. then one day he just made a turn for the worse. if u wanna keep him alive for a while but him in a brackish set up ASAP once they have a turn for the worse it aint for sure u can save him. very nice by the way i love them

How long did you manage to keep one in fresh?

Also remember it could be Allenbatrachus grunniens, which I have kept. I had mine in total fresh for four years and it was sadly another tank mate that caused its demise. In those four years, I also had my two spawn and the female died during spawning. I'm not saying it works for everyone in fresh, but it can, and did for me.

If it is a brackish water fish, shouldn't his diet change as well, seeing goldfish are not meant for brackish fish.
Let us know if you're going brackish.
I'd sure think about it, that's some special fish!

there are two sub species that does look similar

Sadly I lost him, death by gold fish. Yes, the goldfish picked him to death... ate his fins off over night; after I went through all the trouble of setting up a brackish tank. So there goes $100 down the drain; never buying a fish I don't have any knowledge of again.
