I just recently purchased him at my local pet store, they had him marked as a fresh water lion fish. But I'm very unsure if he is actually a fresh water fish. He doesn't seem to be very healthy in fresh water and I have yet to see him eat since I got him.

Can anyone help? Possibly identify my species and help me on info?

Batrachomoeus trispinosus, and yup, it's a brackish water fish.

Wow, never trusting my local pet store for info again. They even had Senegal Bichirs marked as a Dino fish. When I told them they were wrong they got all defensive.

Thanks for the info, now I'm going to have to go buy stuff if I want to keep him.

A lot of stores call senegal bichirs dinosaur fish or dinosaur bichirs. Petsmart always has them listed as that. So they will get defensive lol.

pet shop is always misleading hobbyist , i got my first african pike label as african tiger fish

It really doesn't matter what a store calls it...Dinosaur Eel is no more "incorrect" than Senegal Bichir. These are just common names, each fish has many, so are more commonly accepted/used. The only truely accurate name is the Latin bi-nomial; Polypterus senegalus.

Anyways, the only inaccuracies I care about are related to the size/care of the fish.

Don't buy the stuff to keep him, unless you are ready to dive into the world of salt and all that comes with it. Depending on your finances it may be best to get a refund back from the FS with information that it is NOT a freshwater fish. I'm a proud brackish-water tank keeper and that fish will be happy when the salinity is near salt-water levels.

yep he needs brackish water to be happy! LFS told me they will do good in freshwater, I'm like yeah temporarily! I agree with Tanyoberu, Limz and SimonL I want one so bad but don't have the heart to experiment with it's ability to deal with freshwater parameters.

just to help u out i have owned many trying to have them in just fresh water. but it never works. they eventually will die. the last one i had i did it real slow to fully fresh n i had him eating daily in the fresh water tank. then one day he just made a turn for the worse. if u wanna keep him alive for a while but him in a brackish set up ASAP once they have a turn for the worse it aint for sure u can save him. very nice by the way i love them
