I think i've decided on a fish, based on my large amount of filtration, I may go with a single male convict cichlid.

Can't you find something better than a convict? That tank needs something more specialer. Shrimps? Gudgeons? bumble bee goby? what happened to the clown idea?
I don't know... I have always been a HUGE fan of the lowly convict cichlid, and I have always wanted to raise a single male to plumpy goodness. Sort of like my 14 inch Midas in my 75 gallon, this would be a 5 inch convict in my 10 gallon, over-filtered of course.

Interestingly enough, since its in a VERY low traffic area, i'm not too worried about it. I'll purchase the fish as a baby, and it'll learn the boundaries. Cons are quite bright like that. I had a pair in a small uncovered pond for an entire summer without incident.

It's your tank but a 10g is pretty small for a convict IMO. If your dead set on a cichlid(s) have you considered a pair of dwarfs? They are very underrated and can display very nice coloration/personality. Here are a few thoughts to get you researching

I am growing out a pair of Laetacara curviceps in my 10 gallon. They are eventually going into a 29 gallon and their current 10 gallon be a tank for fry and the female to get a break from the male from time to time.
A pair of EBrams would look awesome in there I have a pair and they are very easy though I dont know about all those filters.
I settled on a jelly bean convict male (short body). Found one today. I'll take some pics when I can.
