I have a mystery fish and a RD that are trying to breed. I thought they were both males, but they have paired up. They are in a 135 that is pretty heavily stocked. There are breeding jags in the tank also. The jags fry are free swimming.

If I post some pics of The mystery fish and the RD PLEASE will one of the vets tell me the sexes. I am having a hard time as I thought they were both male like I said. Their vents looked the same to me:(

And also would you guys let them do their thing? is a divided 135 enough for them to get it done? The reason I ask is because the mystery fish and the RD are starting to get mean toward all others. I am thinking the 135 will be enough because they are all pretty small still.

I have tanks that can take the rest of the fish safely so I would, but I really want to know if the RD and Mystery are in fact opposite sexes....I will pull the fish out and vent them, show full body ,measure, anything that would help.

Feel free to chime in early and often as I plan on resolving this tonight....

The vent pics are horrible, I will try with a flashlight and no flash. They still look the same to me. The "mystery" fish now to me looks to be a barred midas X FH and/or RT....I think I will pull all fish except the pairs and see if they leave each other alone. The tank is 6ft. And a side note is NO ONE messes with my poly. Even the breeding fish let him be in their pot:screwy:

I agree, the first thing I thought was barred midas & fh.

The tail spot make me think RT. His aggression is FH Do you think they are opposite sex?

Cannot ID your mystery fish, some type of flowerhorn is my guess. As for the sexes it is difficult to tell from the photos but I want to say that Midas is a female. It looks really fat, as though it were full of eggs. The two holes appear to be different sizes as well. Like this.. Oo and that would make it a female, males look more like this... oo. There is the chance they they could both be males though, male pairs aren't unheard of.

They used to both be oo and now they both look oO if anything the fh's oo's are closer to the same size. I will try to get better pics of the vents. Any tips on taking close ups of white bellied fish. Maybe a flashlight on the vent and no flash on the cam? My cam is OK but the pics are not coming out right :(

The mystery fish looks like the female due to the vertical bars Trimac females get when spawning. The RD/Midas has a pretty large hump; I don't think females get humps of that size.

That is what I thought but he/she is doing most of the female duties. Do you know of a way to get good vent pics of light bellied fish?
