My walleyes died....I'm so freakin mad.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whenever you put in a new heater remember to let it sit unplugged in the water for at least 15 min so that it can acclimate internally or it could heat the water higher than you set it at.

:( sorry for your loss keep your temp down and your air bubbles going
p.s a battery operated pump is a good investment.

So could just heating the water temp up loose that much oxygen in the water?

I had a sponge filter that shoots out water which would create some oxygen but this made the fish always stay low and away from the water current, that is why I took it off and gave it away.

Well I think I'll stop by the LFS and buy 2 more walleyes, but dam they are like $19.99 per fish... :WHOA: Plus they don't look even close to being healthy as mine since the LFS doesn't feed them much at all.

Walleye need very cold water to thrive. As most north american fish do. Walleye prefer temeratures in the mid to lower 40's in the wild. So reaching close to 80 degrees was probably quite a shock. I feel for your loss; i think walleye are some of the coolest looking fish around.

I have had trouble keeping walleye alive in the fish tank. The LMB shouldn't really give you any problems and you don't need a heater on the tank. Keep it at room temp, and make sure you use a large airstone.

Yeah I knew wallleyes prefer colder water, that is why they stay deep in lakes in the day and come to feed at night when that water is cool. Also they have those unique eyes to see at night which in one factor too.

I guess I had this stupid idea since the LFS puts walleyes, bass, sunfish, and bullheads together in a tank when selling them. They are just so dam active, even the walleyes but in my tank all the fish is kind of non active and very shy. Maybe it's because the LFS have people in there all the time and they get use to people, while I'm not in my room too much so when they say me they hide.

My room is in the basement and it's always freakin cold here. I use no heater at all and my water temp is always around 60-65 degrees. I just had this idea to slowly raise the temp to 70-75 degrees but I guess it rose too quickly then out of hand to 79-80 degrees. Also I forgot that colder water have more oxygen and by raising my water temp I lose the oxygen too.

Well I guess I'll learn as much as possible about these fish in captivities and hopefully by spring I'll have my new setup and there will be no flaws and smooth sailing for now on.

So when a fish die with it's gills flared open and eyes bulging out.....what do you think was the case of the death?

Just Keep one thing in mind they are from the north!! it get's pretty cold out here!!
You would have more luck with colder water!! :WHOA:

water is way too warm, walleyes are from cold water lakes...we just learned our lesson about crappy heaters- somehow the heater went out of wack in the tank with two peruvian gars, and well the temp got up to 95 degrees! The fish should have died but somehow they lived, needless to say we got rid of that heater!
