I have had my ac 110 running for 3 weeks now with no problem and today i decided to wash my foam filter part. so i pulled out the charcoal and the bio media and the foam and i washed the foam and put all 3 back in. Apparently i was supposed to wash the charcoal too but i didnt. My water turned black within 2 minutes. I did almost a complete water change and now its gray. What can i do to get this fixed!? I went and washed charcoal and bio media very thorougly after this and now its all back up and running and the water may be clearing up but i cant tell yet. Is there anything else i can do to speed it up or help my fish or what?:irked::irked::irked::nilly::nilly::nilly:

the charcoal??? lol you mean carbon. yeah you should rinse it off before you put it back in there thats why your water is black. it will go away after awhile. even when i rinse mine off it still makes the water a little black but not for long. i cant imagine if i didnt rinse it you probably cant even see through all the way huh

yea, carbon, my bad lol. At first i couldnt see anything. When i got the water about halfway down i could see my fish. Im new to this whole filter thing. Before, i just popped in a new filter cartridge and it was good to go. But it only lasted a few days with these cats. This filter is so much better but the balance of everything feels so fragile. Im always afraid to screw something up.

what kind of filter do you have?? i use to use carbon in mine but now i just use the bio media. if you ever have to treat your tank for anything (if your fish get ick or any other kind of fungus or bacteria) carbon defeats the purpose.

i have the AC110 and i always turn the filter off for a few hours if i have to treat them. But im thinking of doing away with carbon after a while too. I love the versatility of this filter though.

the water is clearing up and they are back to normal. Im such a noob

it will be fine dont worry about it.just prerinse the powder off b4 putting it in the filter in the future

UPDATE: My small fish is fine but my big fish is now pale and laying on the bottom and wont move. Just lating there breathing and almost turning white. Whats wrong?

Its killing me to watch this. I have spent 9 months with these fish now and my favorite fish is taking a turn for the worse. It keeps rolling onto its side on the bottom then it rights itself.

could it be ph shock from the water change?
