My water turned black! help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its a channel cat. And he had lost his color. He was very pale but he has gone back to green now. His breathing is normal now, but he isnt very active. He just lays there and sometimes he will tip to the side a little and he will straighten himself up. Hes just not being himself.

pull the carbon. keep your water clean. he'll be fine in a day or two.

ok thank you. Should i put anything in there instead of the carbon, or just no carbon

ok, thanks. Ill just save it for when i need to remove meds. Can i add those pot scrubbies things in the carbon's place? if so, will it be beneficial?

Yes, any bio-material will help.

What do you pre-treat the W/C with (dechlor)?

I sure hope you washed all your filter media with existing tank water bro, otherwise you may have killed a good amount of BB and might be going through a mini cycle which is causing you these issues..

Yeah thats an issue, cleanign it properly and also the new water added needs to be checked to make sure the PH and stuff like that is the same or similar to the tank water. Some fish its very delicate with and some are ok with it. Also, carbon is not necessary. Its only the chemical filtration and used to clean out meds and any impurities in the water. Also, if it turns your tank water black like it did its not going to harm the fish.

Thats where i went wrong. I saw the dark water and said "oh s#!t I gotta do a water change" So, since my fish never gave me a problem after a 75% water change, ill take the water down to their level and pretty much start over. Big mistake. I had no de-chlor either as they have never had any problem with water changes. Well, anyways you see what happened in this thread and after i asked for advice i ran to the store which took an hour and when i got back i discovered my fish had passed away. I hate me now and it was a really dumb noob mistake. I really miss that fish and ive been kicking myself in the ass for the past 3 hours. this sucks

guess that will lessen the bio-load on the filter and theres more room for my small cat, but damn i loved that fish.
