why exactly is a 100% water change so bad? bacteria is in the filter not the water it self...i see no problem with it...he changes the water so ofter, why not change it all, it causes no problem especially if he has a place to store the fish for about a day or 2...or even less time.

Yes you do have bb in your filter but you do also have bb in your tank. The bb in your tank is on your substrate, decorations and all that good stuff. You are killing off a large amount of it by doing a 100% water change and that is a very bad idea. If there are not fish in the tank and you wont be putting fish in it for awhile it would be better to tare it down and re-start the tank and let it cycle...(basically drain the water and use the bb from the filter to give it the "help" in starting the cycle or you can start completely fresh and new). just keep the lights off and slowly re-introduce lighting to the tank and see how it goes, if it starts to come back keep the lights off and treat it as you see fit, chemicals or non-chemical. If you still have fish then I would just try keeping the lights off and water changes, the uv light is also a good idea. If that doesnt work then the chemical previously mentioned should help and is meant for aquariums.

ok so after reading i went ahead got 2 work right now i have all my fish in 30 gallon drum i had downstairs, the temp is still a little low but the fish seem 2 be recovering well im going to keep an eye on them for a few hours and see how it goes. I left about 4 iches of water and theres 2 inches of gravel so 6 inches but i went ahead put a power head in to keep the water moving and the lights off this may seem weird that i did it this way but now that all the fish are out even the fry i can take some fry to the pet store and get some credit. I treated the water in the 30 gallon drum with prime and this stuff i got 3 weeks ago but wasnt sure if i needed it , its a additive that adds certian things that are good 4 the fish and it helps balance the water its made for cichlids. I went ahead and put it in the water just to help with stress the water was sitting maybe 30 mins before the fish went in and the temp was around 70 degrees so im happy but sadly im out of food and i was hoping to fead them to matbe help with stress.

oh yea the powerhead has a sponge on it so im hoping this will help keep the bacteria alive with water movment and i checked the ammonia and it was a little high so in the lighter green area not sure on the ppm cuz water smudged most of the cards when my filter hose came off, so im thinking the amount of ammonia present and water movement should help keep the tank in balance ill add water tommorow and post what happins, oh also my male and female had more babies found 3 little fry swiming in the 30 gallon drum, she most of let them out of her mouth when i put her in the 30 gallon drum.

ok so the fish are still doing fine in the 30g drum the males a little shy right now but the tank is back up and running, the water is clear and i setup a new decor design it simple rocks from one end of the tank to the other and about 5 inches high good swiming and hiding, umm as for the fry are you asking what kind of fish are they if so the are cichlids not sure on the name, dang i always forget but the male is all yellow with black vertical line down his body and has a nicley shaped face and, he once had 2 dots on his anal fin( thats the fine on the bottom in the very back right) and now 2 have formed together and made one big one that broke apart into 5 pritty yello dots, hes mean but a good dad.

as for the UV i dont have the money 4 a desent one at the moment but should i still get one and do you run a UV all the time or just as needed. Also im taking most of the fry to the petstore so thats y i did it this way.

also i would like 2 take a pic of one of the bigger fry, beacuse he is black all black and i never seen that before

Just go for the large water changes, I dont understand why everyone thinks BB are so delicate, most Gram neg bacilli that nitrify ammonia are fairly tough little buggers and can doubble their colony size in as little as 2 hrs. I used to do 150% WC's every other day with my juvi discus and never had 1 issue. Just make sure your filters dont sit for very long and they stay moist, as far as your substrate/decor just be quick with the WC so it dosent dry up and you will be just fine.

well i quess ill wait till tommorow to do a water change cuz the tank had about 5 inches of water left in all night with a power head and also did a gravel vac after i added water and im about 20g shy of a full tank going 2 let it rest over night and see what happin but thx for the info
