My Yellowtail Barracuda Grow Out

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i havnt tried pellets yet on these guys. im keepin them on live till i swap tanks. i find that is the best time to change a diet. ill probably use the same method as i did with my gatf when i had them with the tinfoil barbs that chicxulub describes in his atf growout thread. i was thinking of keepin these guys till they get real big but what are some good tankmates? I also will have a painted tank once they go to the bigger one which will cut down on any nose rub. the plants seem to just get in the way with the current and thats why i keep them limited. i also find with more current it also keeps them in certain spots of the tank instead of swimming everywhere and rubbing there faces on everything possible.

i was thinking of possible tankmates. in a 150gal tank 72x20x24 how about 1 red tail payara and 1 odoe pike with the 3 cudas? i know the red tail would be ok but would the odoe pike give me problems? id get a 4-5" odoe when the yellowtails are about 6" at the smallest. and the payara would be about that same time hopefully around 5" with a ton of current would this be a possibility? id also get the cudas at least eating frozen food if not pellets at that time. which would help the other 2 catch on quicker to the feeding regime.

It might work. There will be a large size discrepancy between the red tail and yellows when they are full size. Same with the Odoe. My Odoe was pretty laid back, but I've heard of some being aggressive.
Personally I'd just do 5 yellow tails, and maybe add a megaladoris irwini, or some spotted raphaels, jaguar cats; some sort of bottom dweller that won't spook them.

where did you get them and how much?

I wouldn't keep an odoe with the barracudas. I've heard that they are suer aggresive with tankmates. Of course, there are the shy exceptions.
Yo'll just need to be very lucky. As in tats, there will also be a risk because the skinny barras might look like silverside to it. Plus, I've heard that tats like to attack yellow, red, and silvery fish. Not to be negative or anything but just my tip from tons of research.

what would u guys think about a tigrinus. the cudas would have to be around 8" at the time i add the tigrinus so that they do have some girth. and id get the tig around 6-7. this way it is out of the cudas space being a bottom dweller. and it would also go good with a current heavy tank.

Silvery fish attract predators. I had a 4" tig eat a 3" scomb in one of my grow-outs. Yellows have that slim body style, so I'd stick to smaller cats.

could u give me a few examples of good tankmates. i want somethin thats fairly uncommon, price doesnt matter to a certain point. i like stuff with teeth but when its not possible i like fish that give that WOW appeal to the tank.

Megaladoris irwini has some nice spines and everyone seems to love the pattern on my jaguar cats. Both species are pretty relaxed. Ropefish, leopard ctenopoma are good options too.
There's quite a few options depending on what you're interested in.
