Myleus schomBurgkii and Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
LoL that's what I was hoping not to hear... I have 18 of them and hopefully if everything works out I'll be adding 12 more.... I'm thinking the school of them will deter the rays a bit from going after them.

If these disc fish are possible victims I'm sure the g.altifrons and guainacara. Steirgosi are goners....

The Tinfoils (twin bar) go for less than £5.00ea as youngsters and are the better option in the long term due to the eventual size of 16", having kept two very large groups of them over the years I personally wouldn't keep them with my rays unless I had a 1000 gallon plus tank for them, in tanks 500 gal or less they put too much strain on the water quality due to their insatiable appetites.
Geophagus altifrons is the largest of the Geo complex (depending on locality) but even these would need to be very large to stand a chance, they are more trusting than disc Characins and tend to hug the lower regions of the aquarium making them easier prey. Guyanacara are out of the question,I wouldn't even keep those with adult Hystrix....too small!

Always nice to see your setup Ade....beautiful tank and fish.

Looks like I will have to move some things around... once again. LoL

This is what happens when I start a new tank, get all caught up in the whole "bio-tope" ordeal and then screw myself. LoL. wishful thinking.

A few could go missing into my tank. Lol. But then im in the same situation

Always nice to see your setup Ade....beautiful tank and fish.

Thanks Richard. 😃
Was you that told me the scientific name of these lovely TF.

I wasn't aware that the twinbars grew that big... Thought they maxed out at 10 inch, unlike the gold ones that did get to 15 inch at full Maturity. I currently have 6 TF (6.5 - 8 inch)
When they are big enough for T1s arro to not eat them😁, they will go in his tank in exchange for 4 smaller ones he is growing in his nursery tank..😃

They do eat like crazy mental fish, I've never seen a cleaner fish that eats like this.. Pros and cons really, there is extra bio due to their feeding requirements but also keep tank clean by eating leftover food and ray poo....
The fact they look great is a bonus.

I won't turn this into a fight again

But I don't think the twin tails will get to 16 inch all other tins yes but not the twin tails

I had 3 x gold and 3 x twin tails and in 5 years the golds got to 14 inch and the twin tails just over 10 inch

The twin tails tails do eat ray poo but the gold tins didn't

I know there is 3 - 4 different Latin names for tinfoils so maybe the size reflects the name as I have seen some shops sell what they say are twin tails but they are.not the same the tail is still very red but the black bars are faded and you can't hardly see them on some larger ones but the type I have has deep black stripes and a black flick on the dorsal fin

You can get them very cheap at a small size and they grow very very fast and out grow many small tanks so are returned to shops all the time but it's normally the normall types you see

You get a lot of fish for your money I sold my 14inchers for £10 each and even at than money they didn't move fast and they would eat £10 per month in food
