Mysterious Snail Appeared in tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would see what happens. a snail or two never hurts to have. their always good to eat a little algae or excess food bits here and there.

if they get out of control, theres other fish and snails that will happily take care of the "problem" if your p.bass wont/cant eat them.

Oh well cant find him... prob hiding somewhere or has been eaten... prob would see a bunch if they were to reproduce but im not worried

Do the snails grow? cause they will be food for my P.Bass since they eat crustaceans.
Your cichlids will need your help. Squish the snails using a stone or hammer and feed the snail to your fish. Don't use your fingernails when squishing snails or you risk getting infections.

I like Lupins Idea of useing a hammer :naughty: just not in the tank.... lol They will reproduce even if you have just one from the looks of that lil' bad boy. Some clown loachs, or any type of loach for that matter for the most part will decimate any population of snails if you end up getting to many. They do have their benefits though. though so far keeping the substrate sifted and loach food are the only 2 that come to mind atm. I thought for sure my Bichir's would gobble down the colony in my tank.. but no.. they don't eat them.

Looks like a pond snail, ive got many in my shrimp tank. If you dont want snails get rid of what you see now, or else you may be invaded by hundreds. My guess is it came in on a clutch of eggs. There may be a few more around your tank, or maybe that was the only survivor. They dont need a mate to reproduce either. I feed them to my cichlids they love them, especially my small jack dempsey.

Oh and crushing them does help when feeding them. Cause if given to my fish whole they spit it out, when its smashed I guess they can taste/smell it plus easier to chew.

well you were all right... no i just noticed 5 little "specks" on the glass and just guess what they are... haha oh well maybe they will just help clean things up a bit

if it fits your tank, and its a fish you like, get some clown loaches when the snails become a problem.

one clown loach in my tank has single handedly eaten a few hundred trumpet snails in the last few months, and he's only around 3"

i would like to go with the clown loaches but i have to get them a little larger than what i fing in the LFS. the current residents of the tank are P.Bass and Channel cats, all under 6"
