no, he does not NEED to treat the water. there are many fish out there that will happily dine on a snail infestation in a tank, without the need to add any medications or chemicals that will have adverse reactions on the tank and its inhabitants.

snails are a natural part of alot of fishes diet, so he would be much better suited with something like a clown loach, that will demolish any snails in the tank, but can also be easily fed many other foods and thrive once the snails are gone.
