They actually have done one of the myths that my roommate and I suggested a few years ago. It took a long time from the time I posted the idea to the time it appeared on the show.

It's funny cause it all was started as a drunken discussion/argument with my old roommate.

The bad part is that they didn't take all of the suggestions or options that we wanted to see.

What episode are you refering to?

This would be cool to see something on mythbusters. But in truth its not the floor buckling were are usually worried about... its damage that can tank months or perhaps over a year to show up. To actually break through a floor would probably take quite a bit larger tank than I would deem safe...

It seems ~125g is the usualy limit I see endorsed by various folks (that is if the floor is in good shape and its oriented properly, etc). But plenty of folks have put larger, but also reinforced the floors.

I had a 75g upstairs... and wanted to put a 150 in its place. I probably could have easily without worrying about the floor, and then told folks 150+ is just fine since I have no problems. But that would have been naive of me. I have since discovered there happens to be two steel jacks underneath the floor beneath my tank... it was just a coincidence my tank happened to be sitting on the strongest part of the floor in the house.

The Knight Rider episode...driving onto a moving semi. But, we were wanting to see if it would be possible with a FWD and AWD car, plus see if a manual transmission would effect it at all.

Mythbusters is on right now and just imagine them building a monster tank to use for the destruction!

also people who have posted keep discussing in the forum...people who havent...POST

 I think you guys are getting shut down. He is right though the answer can be easily found out by a structural engineer.

Posts: 4505 Posted 02-09-08 09:17 AM I'm seeing some extremely naive responses here... a 1,000 gallon tank would weigh 8,330 pounds. Think about that weight. There is very little mystery about the capacity of various floors to support weight, the engineering is many hundreds (thousands?) of years old. It is possible to get a good idea of the appropriate weight per square foot for a type of floor by consulting various authoritative sources. When waterbeds came out there were plenty of such accidents. This is NOT NOT NOT a matter for mythbusters, it is a matter of personal responsibility and possibly legal liability and/or prosecution if you plan to install such a heavy object in a building, especially if it is shared with other occupants. If you are really curious about this, it's in textbooks, it's already been tested, measured and confirmed. There's no mystery in it, so it would be a real sleeper of a show.
