Elopichthys bambusa or the Yellowcheek would be the Siberian equivalent in weight and length.....just amazing, I had never heard of it before; who knew there were other piscavorous cyprinids besides the Mahseer! The other Amazing thing is that one of its cousins the Sacramento Pikeminnow still gets over 40inches long (has been known to get over 50 inches in exceptional cases), WOW!
The smallest piscavorous cyprinids would be the threelips from Russia...very interesting fish.

I doubt they'd eat truly big salmon, but I have no problem imagining one of the big pikeminnows of yore swallowing up a big trout or a moderately sized salmon. They'd likely swipe at it in an ambush attack head first and use their pharyngeal teeth to subdue the struggling prey item until it is subdued enough to eat. I can imagine a hundred pound pikeminnow swallowing eight pound trouts and salmon whole and being able to handle up to about a 20 pound prey item.

It breaks my heart to see such a large, dynamic American predator going extinct. These are charismatic fish that need to be brought to the attention of the public in order to save them in a manner similar to what has been done with gar.

Even today, there is an active eradication program for the northern pikeminnow due to their efficacy at eating trout and salmon.

edit- This is what they're killing off:

they are trying to get rid of those bad boys? that's sad...

Sacramento pikeminnow are treated as equivalent to carp. Trash fish. You can even bowfish for them (only allowed for carp and pikeminnow). Not saying I agree with the assessment, just stating how they are viewed.

I've caught quite a few on the San Joaquin river up to about two lbs on chicken livers while fishing for cats. Seen them larger on the Sacramento river.

Tell me about it. We have a large, colorful, active, dynamic predator that is being exterminated because its primary prey is trout and salmon. It breaks my heart.

Imagine the market for those things if the aquarium hobby in America knew what we were sitting on. I think the same people who like ATF, Dorados and Bambusas and the like would snap these up. I know I would!

That's a shame, another beautiful predator. I'm a fan of all of these Ptychocheilus species.

And a baby. I'm guessing they're like a lot of other predators and don't get really nice colors till they're big...

No idea how long I've been trying to get my hands on 2 essentially "trash fish" natives - northern squawfish and alaskan blackfish.
