N. haitiensis? (Black Nasty)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ken Davis (fishfarm@mindspring.com)also was selling some.
If it were me, and you get a few , keep them separated with egg crate, and in warm (mid 80s temps) tank.
They are 'the' most sensitive fish I've kept in over 50 years of fish keeping.

Have you asked an LFS if they could order one for you? Hart's Corner Fish and Pets on Sheridan and Mississippi has offered a few times to order certain fish for me.

Yeah it seems like there are a few fish the local fish stores seem to really have trouble getting, those are one of em. Maybe its just got something to so with the name "black" lol I remember I had a nightmare of a time aquiring my black shark, half of the stores around here didnt even know the difference between a black shark and a red tail black shark heheh literally a BIG difference :D

Haitensis die from bloat easy...You would certainly not want just one. If you are getting them shipped, you might as well get five or so.

Ive had pretty good luck, never lost any fish to bloat before. That said, i thought bloar was more common among african cichlids?

Sensative as in like Discus sensative? Sensitive to water conditions? Jeeze I must have gotten bad information, I was under the impression that nasties were large hardy fish that were pretty tough somewhere in the neighborhood of a red devil or a midas.

Bloat and Haitensis are synonimous...I see duanes looking, so I will let him answer the second post :)

Well how sturdy are nasties? You probably know a lot more about them than I do Do they hold up with other large agressive fish?

I have killed about 20 over the years...I can not grow them in my water.:( I have tried ten at once, all the way to one at a time. It is my unicorn. I fail at the black nasty...

lol yeah I guess we all have those fish, my unicorn is the Pangasius catfish, personally I love the look of them and they get really large which is great but never have I ever been able to keep them alive:)

You're gonna kill a bunch before one even hits the 6" mark.
I killed 9, and the 10th was the charm.
I ended up selling it to a friend, didn't even hit the 7" mark and it died due to bloat.
In 82 degree water.

For haits you gotta keep up the waterchanges, keep them separate from other fish that may stress them, and keep the water temp up. I have had my water temp at 86F for some time now, and they can take more, but I don't like doing that. Epsom salts and metronidazole are essential to keep on hand.

As they get bigger, and are kept alone, the chance of bloating reduces. I have fed mine high protein foods with no ill effects.

I agree with Darth, they either kill their tankmates, or are intimidated to die of stress if they can't kill them.
I think discus are a breeze compared to haitiensus.
For me, 1st batch ended up 12 dead, 2nd batch were larger and "only" 5 died, leaving my female. Bought an adult male to get my pair.
Many of their fry have lived to a certain point, many have perished.
If you get them, there is a great article in TFH mag from July 1995 by Joseph Ferdenzi, another called Oh Island in the Sun. The Dominican Republic by Alf Stalsberg on the Cichlid Room Companion site.
Research as much as you can before getting them, it's too painful otherwise!
