NAN Lighting and Tanning

So I've kept several Silver and Blacks but this whole tanning and NAN submersible light thing is greek to me. Can someone explain all this concept to me?

I see that the lights suction inside the tank and provide side lights on the fish, but do they add spectrum?

And what the Heck is tanning?

So are NAN lights used just for Tanning or do they give you some better coloration in the water?

I know with Salt the PC's (10k and Atinics) make a big difference as well as running lunars at night.

Sorry for ranbling....just curious if this is a whole lighting system or just a temp lighting system for this "Tanning".

Are NAN light for some special purpose or just used to light the side of the fish better?

Any ill effects on the fish or the tank (ie algae blooms)?

Or are these lights just used for tanning Red Aros'. The whole NAN thing is new to me and not much can be googled on it.

From what I gather from reading it's only for tanning and temporary since there are points where if you're not seeing new color you're supposed to turn the NAN lighting down. But then you're supposed to leave it on because it's comparable to how a human tans and if we quit tanning we loose pigment?????

Short of having an asian arow I don't really see a need for it. Heck even with an asian arow I don't think you really need it.

I could always be wrong though. So if anyone feels the need to correct me please do so.

NAN light is not used for tanning. It's just a fluorescent submersible light that give out the soft red lighting. It makes red color fish looks more red.

Currently it is still very debatable as to whether or not NAN lights really do work or not. Currently I have NOT been able to find any scientific evidence that it helps. Some people say that it helps bring out the red in their aros while some do not believe in it. The thing to consider with tanning is that there are a number of factors that might bring out the red in your aro. The combination of diet, lighting, genes, etc all play a part in the process.

Some people simply think that its a red light in your tank. This is why people often ask if they are using NAN lighting when taking pictures of their aros.

FYI - Having it on will also increase your electricity bill alot!!!

So if NAN lighting is not a "tanning" light. Is it simply a light inside your tank, giving side lights to top water fish?

Aro's typically like dimly lit tanks, so do these side lights bother the Aro's?

Do you leave them on while your standard lights are on or just a specially timed light for low time use daily?

Again, I was not able to find out much about these types of lights on the web. However, lights that show off the fish from the side seem like a good idea. Does anyone have pics with and without NAN lights in a tank?
