I've decided to take the plunge but I have a but of a dilemma....

I definitely have a source for growouts , but I've also come across a possible established adult pair for sale. I'm on the fence about which way to go.

I've heard that growouts can be highly aggressive towards one another, but I've also heard pair bonds can be a bit unstable.

When I aquired my large male Festae from Jeff (aclocworkorange) he had recommended trying to introduce him to my female in a large community setting to help them bond quicker. Sure, enough, he was right and 4 spawns later they seem to be a very stable pair.

My only fear in moving the Beani pair is the bond could disintegrate if not handled with care. Why couldn't the same approach work? Besides the temp issues... which would only mean selecting appropriate tankmates.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

For me, festae have always been fairly benign in a community setting, probably because in nature they are surrounded by many species, and a number of other cichlids.
In xCichlasoma beani habitat they are basically the only cichlid, much like haitiensus in its realm.
I have never found either to be at all comfortable in a community setting.

I agree with Duane. Totally different fish needs at attitudes. My Beani not only sometimes dislike each other but they hate any thing else worse.

Ok cool. Thanks guys. Think I may just go for the larger pair if possible in either a 120 or 135 depending on actual size,

I like the idea of grow outs, but think chances may be better for the pair in a larger setting.

Great info!

I have done both, the first time I picked up an adult pair and had to separate them with egg crate, but a summer heat wave took them out.
The 2nd time I picked up 12 juvies (1"-2") and put them in a 150 gal with half dozen 3" Acarichthys heckelli. The heckelli were quickly removed to save their lives.

Within 3 months a pair of beani had formed, and a 3" female spawned with the largest male (temps hovering about 68'F, pH 7.5ish, water hardness 250ppm).
I still have the male, and a female (divided by egg crate in a 6 ft tank), but he took all the others out, either directly killing them, or teaching them to fly. One jumped 4ft across the aisle into a sump.

Lol wow. Flying fish....

I've heard these guys are absolute terrors one way or the other. Species only it is then.....

At least for the time being. I'll probably put a chiller on this tank too then for spring and summer.

Me too! Really looking forward to it.

If I go the growout route, what's been the growth rate like? I suppose not ideal if they spend most of their lives hunting and killing each other.

There's been a couple of growout type threads in the part year. From what I remember, they aren't a super quick growing fish. More along the lines of festae than dovii is how it sounded to me.

Good luck with them, they definitely sound like a great fish to own.
