Nandopsis Beani

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow lol. Can't win for losing huh?

How were they during the growout stage? And do they mind seeing neighboring cichlids? I do have a 210 the future pair could go in but it's surrounded by other growout tanks.

The carpintus were great as growouts, I had 10 youngsters with half dozen Herichthys bartoni, and a few Cryptoheros nanoluteus in a 75gal. Only started to get dicey when they hit the 5" stage. The alpha male is now about 8", and I have one 4"-5" female left, they are separated.

I've never heard of that kind of brutality out of a carpintis. A true texas yes, but most of the carpintis are pretty mellow by ca standards. I think the beani would be ok in the 135. You might have to throw a divider up here/there, but not permanently. If that's what you want I say go for it.

As another peaceful option. Let the wife check out amphilophus lyonsi. They get to be around 10-12 & look like a more colorful smaller trimac....minus the bulky hump head look that the ladies of the house aren't to fond of & the crappy attitude.

In nature carpintus and labridens inhabit the same waters, so with enough of both species to spread aggression around, it just might work.
I have 10 young labridens-blue (pantostictus) together in a 4 ft tank, that range from 2" to almost 5", and at this point, no one individual is taking the brunt.
When I tried 4 pantostictus in a 125 gal, it was chaos and all but 1 died. Not enough distraction.

Think Im going to do something along these lines for the beani....

I can cover the window if need be and if I run a chiller, it won't have to work so hard during the warmer months.......which is basically 10 months out of the year. Not the cheapest way to go, but probably cheaper than having a chiller on all the time. Food for thought anyways....

I did pick up (6) Herichthys carpinitis escondido and (6) cryptoheros cutter for the office tank. Labridens may take a little longer to hunt down.

i have recently picked 3 Beani, around 3" range, new to this fish but taking care in making sure they dont die of bloat or kill each other...

Best of luck, I was raising a single beani in a 29g with perfect water and food. I raised it from a fry no bigger than .25" all the way to 3" amd just recently lost it to bloat. Im confused, mad and sad. Theyre difficult even in perfect conditions. Again good luck to you.

Lost one fish at the shop (decided to fly into a tank full of rusties down below) lost another female who was chased to the point of ich. Separated the remaining 3 and kept the female alive and eating till yesterday.

Considering how much a chiller will cost to run during the summer I've decided to bring the remaining 2 inside. The 135/75 stays at 71, cant see any other tank and or fish and with the drip in place, can get an immense supply of clean water. Stress free basically.

I don't mind having 1 fish in each tank, but thought maybe some other non cichlids might be ok. I guess ideally, kept solo they stand the best chance to survive long term. Bottom dwellers or livebearers maybe.........
