I'm not sure how well it would work, but the marineland maxi-jet powerheads(the new style) are sealed, so you can keep the motor/pump unit outside the tank, and use a feed/return hose for circulation.

That's a pretty good idea! It's been up and running for over a month now and doing well. I have some brown growth on the sand which I believe to be detritus... Other than that ok. I have a blue-green chromis (which will be returned to my main tank at some point), a hi fin banded boby and a tiger pistol shrimp. I want to put my chromis back in the main tank and get another active swimmer for the 5g...

Sexy shrimps would be ... well sexy in that tank lol. Maybe a small clown goby or something.
