Nano-Reef Q&A! Checked Daily!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont have a filter yet, I was looking at just getting an aquaclear, i have one on another one of my aquariums and it works great. Ill look into the 20, i have a really limited budget so if i can afford it then maybe. Id like to get a few fish and some corals going, i like lots of colors so i like the extra choices id have with the 20. thanks!

I just feel that your going to save yourself more money down the road having the biggest tank you possibly can. Sell the 10 gallon if you can, or take it back if its new. Get everything to work on a 29 or so, this will be over filtered enough for ya. Its going to cost a bit getting the lights though, so start saving them dollars.

I got a question for ya. I have a mando hair algae problem in my 20 gallon nano tank. I have scrubbed the live rock and done 30% water changes for a month or two now. Can you help me.

where I work one of our tanks has a similar problem with the hair algea, we havent had any luck irradicating it. its a big problem with clogging the intake on the filters, other than that it kinda looks cool the way its growing on the rocks in there. If you can find a way to get rid of it though, let me know!

--And Ill go ahead and save up for the 20 and the stuff to get it working, I think you're probably right about saving over time, thanks!

i need to know a few things first:

Whats your source of water?

Whats your water tests?

Whats your lighting schedual?

Stock?

Feeding schedual?

All of the things will help us to narrow down to a possible cause of the problem. Hair algae is usually started with high readings of nitrate and phosphate. If water source is the problem, then water changes are not really going to help you as much as normal. Using a clean source of water (RO/DI) is the best way to prevent this.

-My water is from the lfs. I believe it's RO with saltwater mix.
-The water tests are fine when i got it tested a few days ago.
PH, Nitrate, Nitrite
-The lights go on at about 7 a.m. when i leave and go off about 8 p.m when i get home.
-I have one ocellaris clown and one bicolor psuedochromis. her are also a couple of hermit crabs and a few snails.
-I feed the fish once a day

test your the phosphate levels and see what those are at. Also cut the light back a bit. thats 13 hours of light, not helping your case. Do you have actinic and white light on seperate switch? if not then just run the light for 8 hours. Even thats a lot of light. Reducing the lighting will help your case a bit.

Howdy. I think i have a problem here but i kinda like it. Honestly i havent been keeping up with this tank as i had plans to start a nano reef but never got any corals... i feed the fish once a day, leave the light on all day and the water evaporates quite a bit so then i just add water. Check the pics, sorry the tank is dir-tay but a friend is using my magna-float and i tried using a paper towel but i wore my arm out trying to scrub this stuff.

Will this algae kill corals? I kinda like it thats why i ask.

I wanna comb it ;)
