They are easy to use, but really limited on what you can put in them. They work better for salt I think.
Not at all, there's tons of really awesome looking tiny fish that get no bigger than an inch. My LFS has a nice selection. Some have the most amazing colors I've ever seen. They can get pricey though, some are $15-20 each! I forget the names of them though.

There's also shrimp, which has exploded in popularity lately. I wouldn't mind having a little nano tank with some Black King Kong shrimps, but at $400+ each, I'll hate to pass :D

I like them better for saltwater also. I have a 28 gallon loaded with coral, 4 fish, 1 shrimp, lots of crabs and snails, and it is definitely my best looking tank.

I have a 28 but it is not running yet. I think I'm going salt with this one. I can keep it in the livingroom and my FW tanks are in a room by themselves.

Nano tanks dont know whats worse that or all the Flowerhorn hybrids

Easily the most ridiculous thing I've read today. How can you even begin to compare the two?

I gotta side with jcardona here, I love smaller tanks and there are a ton of great little fish and inverts out there that do well in them.

I think there are a few reasons why these setups aren't more popular on MFK...
Knowledge: many MFKers may know a lot about larger species of fish and their requirements, but many have no idea what sort of fish or inverts would do well in small systems.
Aquascaping: IMO, MFK has some seriously ugly tanks. Nano tanks really take some skill to make them look good. Try building a 6 gallon tank barebottom with a flower pot and tell me how good it looks.

And it really takes some skill to maintain a small system, a lot more than the guy that goes out and buys a big tank, gets an FX5, throws some PFS and flower pots in it, buys a couple cichlids, and everyone pats his back for doing a "great job."

I love big tanks as much as the next MFKer, but small tanks can be just as impressive IMO, and they can fit in any room of the house.

I've had one.. and tbh prefer going "nano" with my 10's or 20's... the upkeep just wasn't worth it to me for the smaller set-ups. I could never enjoy them at home, and maintaining the ones we have set-up at work are annoying. trying to get into them and do water changes, and simple maintence can be a real Pita.

Though I have considered Fluvals new Flora set-up w/ the CO2. Just because I would like to eventually fiddle around w/ CO2 and think this may be an interesting way to learn it w/out breaking the bank right away.

The main drawback for me is that I don't really have the money to make it look nice, with proper fertilization and soil, lighting, etc. I set up a rimless 5g, but it has sand so my plants didn't like it much and mostly just died. Meh. It looks more like a rocky shore biotope with a chunk of lacerock. I still love it as it is, but wish I had the $ to make a proper micro-jungle.
