Wow, an entire paragraph with no punctuation. That was a stream of conciousness. I say cycle your tank, but I don't. I add prime, stress zyme, and perform water changes. I also use carbon. I haven't lost a fish during cycling for years. It's up to you, but you have to be vigilant.

anyway, finding a quality lfs is tough, people always think they know everything and are totally unwilling to even consider another possibility.

I sort of agree that the "cycle" has taken on almost Mythic porportions, I do things the old fashion way of slowly stocking and pausing between additions to let the filter catch up. That means a whole series of ongoing mini cycles as opposed to one big cycle. I add plants on day 2 and start adding fish the day after that but it can easily take a couple months to finish stocking. Of course with very large fish it is trickier. Seeding the filter from another filter really helps and with larger fish I do daily ware changes the first couple-3,days, evryotherday for a week more, and down to my normal schedule after that (this also allows the filter culture to catch up)
