If your granpa is rich and cheap he probably got that way for a reason, learn from him while you can... Seriously dude, use plants. There is no way you adding bioballs is going to provide more surface area for bacterial growth than a pond already has (like Ben is suggesting). Plants in addition would be more than sufficient. They consume ammonia directly avoiding the nitrogen cycle all together (unlike bioballs) so water changes are not nearly an issue. Just top off.

Right but am thinking if i get an alligator snapping turtle he will just up root the plants so i will create a mini slope in the pond not letting him get to other side. from the plant area there will be circulation from the plant side to the turtles side, good idea? ooo and i could have an eco-system i could put in some high fin sharks to eat exsess algea (on the turtles side pretty sure they wont get eaten by him) and on the plant side put some mosquito fish to get rid of those nasty mosquito larve.

And circulate with WHAT? There is no power... Keep it simple and put the plants in the pond with the turtle. The turtle will likely try and float on top of plants not destroy them. I am not talking about little aquarium plants, I'm talking about the large growing kind you get at pond stores that grow through the water surface. Keep this simple man... Nature did the homework for you, roll with it.

No, they won't. Plants are very common in ponds. If you are concerned you can always put them in the plastic pots for the roots and float or leave on the bottom. Then you have no worries from what ever the turtle decides he wants to do. Good luck...
