Wow. Really? What size? At such insane prices, I'd be much worried about illegal harvesting, poaching, etc. threatening the wild fila... and the capa too.

Brazil locked down the exports a couple of years ago because of the demand. Of course, this only drove up the value of the fish which likely increased the incentive for poaching. The continued lack of specimens on the market seems to indicate that Brazil is doing a good job at enforcing their policies however.

Kinda puts us as hobbyists in a pickle. On one hand, we all want our rare crown jewel specimens. On the other hand, most of us strongly support conservation and want to help the fish that we care for.

Tough choices. :/

What size was the $1700 one?

Yeah, that pickle is the grey area. If only one knew with reasonable certainty that by buying that or this wild-caught fish they would be aiding and abetting to nudge the fish closer to extinction, then the choice would not be tough but very clear - don't buy it.

The usual come-back is this: yeah, I won't buy it but the next in line will. Well, we are talking about a personal conscience, a personal choice right now, not a choice of a group of people or hobbyists and not a societal choice. If you want to change the world, become a politician and an activist but it all starts by practicing what you want to preach anyway.

Do filas and capas only/mostly come from Brazil? How about Peru, Colombia, etc.?

yet this make me think I would rather spend a thousand on fila rather than $500 on a capa.

off topics, just wandering about b.vaillantii elsewhere, are they as rare as filamentosum?

Possibly more so. They don't have the demand that filamentosum has, so they're less likely to be brought in. I've personally only ever seen two that are maybes.

they are very rare here, but the price is so much cheaper than fila. Got mine awhile ago, they grow really slow, one of them has started to eat pellet after nearly 3 weeks of training.
