Need a little advice!

i think that it is a good start. I have a friend up there that may be able to help with your web sight stuff and he is a fish guy as well lol. pm me if you like and i will ask him.

Good website!

If I were you, I would put the majority of the tank specific stuff on your pricing page instead of the "About Us" page. Leave the about us page for your own tanks, bio, etc. :)

I would also seriously look into insurance...maybe even talk to a lawyer regarding this. If I bought a tank from a business, went home, filled it, and woke up to a few inches of water on the floor-likely I would look for compensation for damages. Just the legal fees (even if the plaintiff didn't win) can set you back. Insurance will definitely help cover you.

how do you plan to make money building these? your prices are too good to be true. i mean double click to edit your own price? thats a generous feature. my site wil go out of business if they found out about this.

this has to be a scam

Lol yeah I haven't done that page yet. I just am kind of at a loss because each stand and hood is going to be a different price you know? We are going to price the tanks at $1/per gallon. But I don't know how to really make a set price for stands and hoods.

About the insurance...Is there any way to not be liable for a tank that breaks. I mean we are just starting out and a lot of big businesses have the liability sticker kind of saying "we will refund you for nothing but the tank" meaning no damages to the house or anything.

for the prices just put this "$ please call" or a small sentance stating that items are priced to the individual piece and to call for a quote.

as for the insurance, i doubt you will be able to get away without it. if someone took you to court and won it could clean you out and ruin your business. speak to a solicitor, they will tell you what you need. just to be on the safe side and protect yourselves from all angles.

Yeah I will try to get a hold of someone to talk to. We really want to get more into the furniture though. You know? The stands and hoods. We don't really want to have to be liable for any of that. I mean we really aren't even a buisness yet, we don't even have a buisness lisence for this. We are just throwing it out there on craigslist and a local fish forum. I just made the portfolio so people could see some pictures of the work we have done. So I don't have to keep emailing them pictures. If we get a lot of orders and start building by word of mouth then of course we would hire a lawyer and get insurance and a lisence and all that. But for now we don't really have the money to do all that.

Also, what do you guys think about customers signing a liability waiver at time of purchase. Something along the lines of "After tanks leaves our shop we are not liable for any damages done to any home or property incase of leaking or breaking" I mean, I have faith in our tanks. We have home built ones in our house that have never leaked and I would say they look just as nice as one you would see in a pet store, if not better. But we don't have the money to be sued for a brand new harwood floor if something were to happen?

Would this scare off customers? I don't want them to think we make piles of crap for tanks just because we make them sign a waiver? Does that seem to unprofessional? What do you guys think?

a liability waiver will say that you have no faith in your work. If i was a customer coming to you for a quote and you gave me one of those i would walk straight out because if im buying something as expensive and something as important from a structural standpoint, i want to be able to return it and get my damages paid. most customers will pay a little more by going to a store because the tanks are guaranteed and the stores have insurance should the tank fail.
just as an example: if you did do shoddy work on a tank and it burst, why should the customer have to have their insurance premium increase because of a claim which wouldnt have happened had your work been up to standard. they would pay years of higher premiums because of a tank they bought. thats not fair.

i think you need to rethink your view of the business world and dealing with customers. you cant have your cake and eat. if you want to sell to the public you are going to need insurance. if it is law, similar to here, that you need insurance and/or license and you dont get it, then your contract wont be worth the paper its printed on as law trumps contract almost every time.

its coming across now that you started out with wanting to be the best store around for custom tanks and stands but now your just wanting to basically rip them off because you dont want to pay insurance.

with your current thinking you need to speak to a solicitor because, waivers or not, you will be sued by someone who wont give up because you asked them to sign a waiver when you should have insurance in the first instance and chances are they will have the finances to either bankrupt you through lawyer fees or winning. that person's appearance is a matter of when not if.

the site looks good though, best of luck to you.
