Need Advice: Electrical bill increasing due to heating tanks during winter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Solutions in order that I would do it...

Move tank inside house, rent that half of garage for ungodly amount
(to fund fish hobby)(don't worry the wife already knows how much you spend)

Insulate the back, sides and top 24/7.
the front viewing panel, at lights out...

2 x 250watt Stealths and a controller to run them at the same temp...

When heating anything you have to consider the ambient temperature. If it is 55f in the garage, and you want 75 you have to have enough watts to overcome 55f. If you insulate then there is a barrier between ambient and desired temperature, now you are only heating the tank and not the garage...

You can heat the garage with a heater meant for the room, and raise the ambient so the heaters will have enough watts.

with enough insulation you can heat that tank with just a little bit of power...
without it you are throwing the money away.

well carswell what would you do???

my buddy is way into HVAC. ended up being an assitant teacher at his votech school. all he does is stuff all the mumbo jumbo ambient air crap in my ear. it's actually really annoying.

888 i go for looks so i aint going to insulate my tanks but seeing your's are in the garage i am sure you're not going for looks. but i am certain your 250w heater is going to be constantly on in a 140g trying to compinsate for 20-25 degree temperature difference between air and water.
Since you asked I would insulate the garage well and float rigid insulation on all the walls you can and install draft uards, Then I would run a heat supply duct out there. I really don't care how educated you think your friend is it doesnt mean jack as far as this thread is concerned.

In fact I even helped zenzo with the two stealths to one thermometer ordeal.

first of all the HVAC bs wasnt aimed at you.

second of all if he aint going to get the correct heaters to do the job it's pointless to do anything besides get the air temp in a range that a 250w heater would work.

and third i figured seeing my buddy would be smart enough to tell the guy that then you would be too but guess not.

and for my fourth point thanks with all your other post it has came to the conclusion you are an ***.

due to the winter cold (high 50s -low 60s)...

That cold, huh? 'sounds practically Arctic. ;)

As others have said, you have two choices: either reduce heat loss from the tank (insulate), and/or heat it with an energy source cheaper than California electricity (e.g., putting it in a heated space).

Hes an arse for trying to help you find your way to the correct solution?:screwy:

I have an excellent money-saving solution. See if your neighbor has an external outlet somewhere and run an extension cord to your garage. This will save you alot of money, but you have to make sure you wake up before him every morning and hide the cord.
