Need advice on a filter!

I wasn't necessarily looking for a HOB. Are there any canisters that are comparable for water polishing?

Yep. You can use any cannister you want for water polishing, but, the AC110 moves 500 gph. Most cannisters move significantly less than this. Again, most cannisters are designed to provide a balance between mechnical, biological, and (should you choose) chemical filtration. You are looking, strictly, for mechanical. An AC110 @ 500 gph will give you more mechanical filtration than a cannister that can hold four times as much bio media, but, only runs at 225 gph. Get it? Bang for the buck says you go with the AC110 here. If you still don't want the HOB AC110, sure... You can spend five times as much for an FX5 or seven times as much for an Eheim to get an equivalent gph (after media insertion). Choice is yours, but again, bang for buck says AC110. There is a reason why several of us have each provided this same recommendation.

I use a magnum 350 for mech and polishing and love it. The pleated filter is great for removing every spec possible, but normally I use the standard mechanical sleeve wrapped around the media container. Since I hardly ever use carbon, and have more than enough bio in my other two filters I have 500mL of purigen in two of "The Bag"s that I keep in the media container. It works great and is very low maintenance.
