Need advice on a pump to make water changes WAY easier...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
dude soap is not chlorine. Think about it. Totaly difrent. The soap can kill your fish . Rinsing the tub wont get rid of it. Dechlorinator is for chlorine not soap

I think Piicklez is saying that the water that supplies his home is not under pressure as it is in the U.S.. I have a feeling that he has a cistern or similar water tank probably located on the roof of his home. If I am correct, the water coming out of his faucet/tap is gravity fed and not pressurized, so a Python or Aqueon water changer will not work for him.

Piicklez, you might want to consider purchasing a large tote or trash bin made of plastic that is considered drinking water safe. You could then fill that with water from your tap/faucet using a drinking water safe hose, adjusting the water temperature to your requirements. Then you can purchase a pump that would lift the water to refill your aquarium. Keep the tote next to your aquarium when you fill it with fresh water so you don't need to pump such a long distance.

and if you or your parents dont have any water pressure. You can also get a pump like first one i posted. they make them in 12 volt and 110. With a on demand pressure switch built in. Just dont think they sell that type on this site. What you do is run one line in your water reserve. and another to your main plumbing. When ever you turn your water on pressure releases and pump kicks on auto. when you done with water it will auto shut off. if you in a rural area and worry about electric bills exc. You could always get a 12 volt solar panle and use a couple car batterys and get free electric . The type of pump im talking about is used in travle trailers. some places call them caravans.

the last two people have got it. I said i understand my bath tub isnt the best thing and people kept on saying about it.. deeda is right about my water. I have low water preassure as ive said about 3 times. so thanks to wcked and deeda. both very helpful. i will get something to store water in for the future.

Do what the reefers do.

-Get a 55 gallon barrel.

-Put a heater, powerhead, and submergible pump in the barrel.

-Fill the barrel with water and whatever chemicals you treat your water with.

-Turn on your powerhead and heater to get the water to the right temp and mix the chemicals/water.

-Then you can store it until you are ready for a water change. When you are ready, just turn on the pump and pump the water into your tank.

-Building a little cart with wheels so you can push the 55 gallon drum around is a MAJOR help.

okay guys, ive had a think. So I could get some kind of water container which would be enough for a water change, put my water in that and then pump it out with a pump like this?
Its 4500 lph and apparently has a head height of 4.5 m, which would make sense as my fluval fx5 easily does 8 feet..

Do you reckon that this will be able to give some good length, head height and speed? Ive been looking at the other pumps you guys have suggested, but i thought i'd try you with this as for me its cheap, easy to use and set up, it seems friendly and simple compared to some of the more industrial pumps and its already in england.. Again guys thanks for the feedback you've helped a lot in to my little quest :)
P.S i dont have a basement or anything like that i just want the pump to pump out of the container across the floor and into my tank, but i want my container in the bathroom to save mauling with heavy things which i want to avoid, so it would be the same as in my bath tub but in a safe container filled up from my tap on my bath..

I just took a quick look at the pump you linked to and it looks like it should be fine to use.

Just another thought though. If you also have a shower head at your bathtub, you could add a shower diverter valve at the shower head and buy a drinking water safe hose (usually used for RV's) and use that to fill your aquarium directly. You would still need to adjust the water temperature at the bathtub. You could add your water conditioner directly to the aquarium as you are filling it with water. That would save you from having to mess with a separate tote.

how high will u be pumping the water is gonna be your problem. need to make shore what ever pump you get is good for the head hight you need.
