Need advice on discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oh and ive kept a bichir with discus...no problem except the bichir likes to still the food before the discus have had their fill. I'd only do 50% a week wc in my opinion.

Juvenile discus need to be fed 5-6 times a day. You may get some argument around here about keeping juveniles in a 110 to grow out. Most would say a 40 or 55 is better for that depending on how may you get.

what sort of food can i feed them? all my fish get guppies, silver sides..white fish..stuff like that.

should i be feeding them...bloodworms? and they'll need a pellet staple too, won't they? i usually use hikari cichlid gold..

If your 110 is US gallons, then a dozen discus would work fine. Your PH is fine for domestic discus, and breeding has nothing to do with PH. Discus eggs don't fertilize well in hard water, it decreases the hatch rate, so it's water hardness and not PH that screws up the hatch. It's advisable that only adult discus be placed in planted tanks anyway unless you have had good success with discus already. Discus will stunt easily because of water quality, and planted tanks are hard to clean. Yes, you can probably get away with 2-50% water changes weekly. You probably won't grow 7" or 8" fish, but average fish of 5" to 6" which is fine. You do not need RO water for any reason unless your faucet puts out liquid rock. Generally, if you can drink the water and live, discus can too.

yes, i meant 110 US gallons. so i will start with 6 and change the water twice a week.

I feed frozen beef heart, salmon, shrimp, Hikari frozen bloodworms, glass worms, daphnia, and Hikari Discus Bio Gold as a dry food. I would feed growing fish 3 to 5 times daily, depending on how big they are. Really small fish need to eat often. With the exception of the frozen worms, I chop all big pieces of food into discus bite size pieces.

As far as food... I'll add a couple to the mix. I use a lot of Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef flake and ON Formula One flake. I could never get mine to take to Bio-gold or even the NLS discus pellet, I wish I could. There is a person on Simplydiscus.com that has a tuna recipe that lots of people rave about.

You could go up to 12 or 13, maybe even 15, discus with consistent water changes and few tank mates.
.

IMO That's kinda packed for that many adult discus if they are fed properly.

Although. . .
The smallest discus myself and many others recommend buying are 3-4''
and in all honesty. . . .
(hate to say this)
If you started with 12 x 3-4'' fish after the odd "runt" or in-tank political dispute as they grow to adulthood you would probably end up with 9-7 adults. A much better number IMO in a tank that small.

I'm sure I'll catch hell for insinuating fish will probably die. 7 was a bit negative I know. But I'd say ending up w/ 9 out of 12 before a group is settled in is being quite realistic.

That being said I am a fan of purchasing (or creating) groups and that's that. Get stocking over with asap when creating a discus group/tank.
Once order is established adding and subtracting fish IMO typically ends up stressing out the old fish or the new fish or both. Nevermind the unavoidable quarantine break when adding fish no matter what precautions are taken.
