I am mixing the salt in my tank, because I didn't have enough foresight to buy an extra heater. In my defense, the tank is bare, with no animals. This is a new setup. Should I turn off the filter/skimmer, or will the extra commotion help with mixing?

Shut it off till the salt is visibly dissolved, then you can turn it back on but take out fine filter mat. and charcoal if any so salt won't build up.

Now that you know this never speak of it again and NEVER us the 'S' word...:D

It's FW or raise hampsters...:headbang2

I have 11 freshwater tanks, but no hampster. I do have a chinchilla. LOL

lol, I have 5 s.w. and didn't even know that there were fish in f.w. until this year. Ewurm get your self a large plastic trash can, a power head and a heater and you'll be good to go.

LOL! I didn't know fish could survive in SW until I got bit by a Great White Shark while swimming in the Atlantic with my lucky pork chop around my neck.

From now on, I'll have a few spare heaters to mix salt with.

Whats going in the tank Ewurm?

I have an aerator in their to help with the mix, I am adding a handful of salt at a time. Also added a powerhead. When the salt looks dissolved, I turn on the Skilter, and let that mix things up some more. Then I turn it off, and add some salt. Hydrometer is reading 1.019 at the moment.

If you used a good salt like Instant Ocean you wouldn't have to do all that crazy stuff. I just put my salt in a 5 gallon bucket, add water, stir and pour it in the tank. The salt disolves instantly and i've been doing it for years that way. You don't need heaters. I never even heard of people using heaters in their mixing water. Unless your doing a 50% or more water change it wont effect your temp hardly at all.
