Need Experts Advice. Motoro Stingray dying.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The snail isent burned.

It dies do to osmosis. The salt simply dries it out.

Again, nothing to do with burning.

The only effect salt can have on a fish is destroying the slime coating (thats why it looks like the snail is burned).

The skin wont be affected unlesh its exposed for a long time by a very high concentration of salt.

Hey everybody. Thanks for all the support, means a ton, you guys are great.

As far as salt vs heater burn, my heater is covered. I also searched online for backup on the whole aquarium salt chemical burn thing and found a lot of Fish Keeping website that say things like "
Always fully dissolve salt before adding it to the tank. Undissolved salt can chemically burn your fish. Hot water will dissolve salt more rapidly, as will agitation."

So, I do believe that was the cause. I will be looking into getting another Stingray in a month or two. I'll definitely keep you all posted. Thanks again.

Sry for your loss, at least you learned and were willing to try and save him. If somthing like that happind at the LFS who knows how well she would have been takin care of.

I'm still not so convinced that the salt was the only problem the first time around. You said that the ray's appetite had decreased before this injury happened and it's clear that the ray was quite skinny. In another post you mention having low but detectable levels of nitrite and ammonia. When did you take those readings? They could have been significantly higher after a heavy feeding. Even if the salt is what ultimately killed the ray, I'd give some more thought as to what was responsible for its condition before that, which I'd bet would have to do with water conditions.

Salt burning your fish is complete and utter bs. It just isent possible.

Is your heater shielded or is it just put behind the rocks?

sorry to say, but salt landing on a ray's disc will be able to cause damage, via osmosis much like a slug, since it is still dissolving, especially if there is already a problem area, slight wound etc. it is very possible and the severity depends on how much comes into contact with the ray and for how long.

have you never put straight table salt into your mouth when you had a cut or canker sore or anything? it BURNS LIKE HELL. so don't say salt burn is BS.
