its a shame and never should have happened but dont let it eat you away.
look, most of us are guilty on the impulse buy when it came to our first ray...

keep your head up and get another ray...soon.

Sorry for your loss everybody makes mistakes learning from them is the important part.

Update: Hey guys. Woke up this morning to a dead ray. Totally sucks. Poor guy. I feel like such an idiot over the salt. Believe it or not the box says nothing about it or gives any warning. I started aquarium keeping with this stingray, so I didn't know of the danger. I never would have added salt to the tank like that. Sigh.

Thank you for all you're help and input.

Talk about jumping into the deep end! Don't give up! ray keeping can be very simple, yet so very challengeing. Learn from your mistakes, and move forward. If these fish where easy there wouldn't be forums dedicated to them.

sorry to hear that.
scaled fish have a bit easier time with undissolved salt than scaleless fish, but the general rule of thumb is to dissolve before adding. unfortunate that you didn't know, but can't really blame you if this was your first go at an aquarium. we've all made costly and upsetting mistakes at one point or another.
if you decide to get another one, you will be aware of this point at least.

Hate hearin that. I didnt know about the dangers of adding salt directly to the tank for a long time, but I always would add it into the back side of my HOB filters (back when I had em). Actually I dont use salt much anymore...used to use it all the time, but rays really dont need it so IMO why waste the money. I do however add it into my sump when I see any scratches or nasty bite marks that dont seem to be healing fast. Hope you can get ahold of another ray. Good luck...Oh by the way, I would steer away from any type of feeders, too easy to introduce parasites.

That sucks. Was really a beautiful motoro.

That being said, I'm wondering if there isn't something to this idea of shocking a ray that is curling back to health-- certainly don't have enough evidence based on my whacking a ray with a net and someone else putting in new water, but it's worth thinking about. Especially as "Keep the water clean and the lights out" seems to have had a zero success rate.

Is your heater coverd or can the ray come in direct contact with it?

It looks like a classic heater burn to me.

Also, being burned by salt sounds like bs to me.

When you desolve salt in water it neutral. I wont raise nor lower the ph.

It simply isent corrosive.
