hole in the head. metronidazole for 7 days with 50% water change dail

1. it is not typical HITH... Look at a gars head sometime, that is thick bone being eroded. This condition is very different in gars than it is in typical bony fish.

2. metronidazole is not a recommended medication for gars without careful use. Dosage rates are tricky and it is not advised.

Everywhere I look it seems to be the food of choice.

where have you been looking? it's a horrible alternative to frozen smelt, pellets, or live-bearing feeders you raise...

Dude you manged to find an article on Tristoechus digestive enzymes and Longnosed gar digestive tract oncology... you can not tell me you do not know or can not find the well documented issues with using goldfish as feeders... I don't believe you on this..

I would just raise the temp to low-mid 80's, add salt ( i would add around 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water), and do 50% water changes every three days and remember to add salt after you do a water change. Then once the wounds heal do a 50% water change and dont add any salt, just to get the water back to normal.

And feed the fish very high quality food while is is recovering.

I am not a expert by any stretch of the imagination, but im just telling you would i would do. Hope it helps.

Salt is an amazing thing...

goldfish have lots of thiaminase which breaks down thiamine or vitamin B if you have a lack of thiamine any human , animal will die.
