Need help all the discus are going south!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The discus have cloudy eyes and slime coat problems. Even if the rays seem fine they are immune to whatever parasites they are harbouring and the discus are not.

I suggest adding salt (aquarium or pool salt is fine) at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons and Kanaplex by Seachem according to directions asap. You've got some bacterial issue going on along with external parasitic irritant causing the slime coat reaction.

+1

Nothing wrong with adding salt with discus....its commonly done in the discus world. The salt actually causes production of slime coat to help the fish ward off whatever is ailing it externally :)

Thanks for all the help and input everyone, the fish seemed a little better this morning, however I only peeked at them as I was walking out the door.
How long do I keep adding salt? I imagine I would add salt daily with my daily waterchanges until they are doing better? But if that is too much I better find out ahead of time

I would continue with the salt and temp treatment till you start seeing some improvment you can go a Tbs per 10 gallons also if it gives you a little comfort rather than going per 5 gallons with improvment. I done it up to a week on differernt occasions with signs of progress after the 3rd and 4th day. I am not a fan of treating with Meds unless i know for sure what the problem is!

Ading salt is not a problem. I've used salt before in my discus tank multiple times without any issues. Are they eating at all?

Keep the same concentration of salt for a week....meaning add back what you take out with water changes. Glad they are looking a little better :)
